SDEngineer:
The universe is 13-20 billion years old depending on who you ask.
Earth has been here 5 billion.
That gives us 8-15 billion years of missing time.
Within 100 to 200 years mainstream science will know how to get to the stars so consider a race 1000 years ahead of us, or 1 million years ahead. It would be probably impossible for them to miss us since we probably stand out like a sore thumb.
Here, this the most comphrehensive presentation that I have found on it.

July 24, 2008 at 5:07 PM #246366seattle-reloParticipant

My biggest question is always “WHY?” Why would aliens travel many many light years to come to earth.
Why? For the same reason we as humans have a fascination with — and are looking for — life on other planets. Why look for life on Mars? Because we’re curious beings. Oh, and because we can.
See, that thought process is flawed. Lets say there are aliens exploring the universe. We as highly narcassistic humans in assuming that aliens are like us is an inherent flaw. Why do you think that they are curious just because we are? Why do people project images of aliens that look humanoid? Why do they want to study us just because we study other creatures? Why would they want our resources just because we can’t seem to get enough of our own? If there are aliens out there, what are the chances that they are anything like us primates (not monkeys ;D)? Really the mythology of extraterrestrial beings coming to our tiny little planet Earth is just a projection of our own narcassistic need to feel important in this big universe of ours. It’s entertaining, but highly unlikely.
Nostra – I liked the video, it was very good.

July 24, 2008 at 5:25 PM #246371TuVuParticipantDWCAP–Nice wrapup. Those in my generation (BB) are probably all familiar with the Twilight Zone episode where the aliens came down and got a bunch of people to go back to their planet with them. And it turns out…they had a cookbook for “serving mankind”! Good thing about those particular aliens, tho, was they were about 9 feet tall, hideously ugly, and obvious as hell. If they had the smarts to get here, why didn’t they try to blend in better? Still one of my favorite campy episodes. And it cracks my 20-year-old up.
