It is called insurance for a reason. It is health insurance, not health care. Like Immigration, there is room for reform, but the pork packed bill is going to be a time bomb if it passes. Not only that, there are some people whether they are very wealthy or very healthy and young, who forego health insurance because they do not use it. Why should they pay for other people? We already have a safety net for indigents and TG knows this is not about health care reform, it is just another big government power grab. No takers on the children limit? Does that mean even the libs understand when there is too much government? Maybe there should be a parenting test? We test drivers, why not parents? It might cut down on the prison population. That would be a good thing.

July 25, 2009 at 12:02 PM #436637afx114ParticipantZeit, can you or any of the opposition offer an alternative plan? Or are you happy with how things are now? Are you happy with the US being ranked somewhere around 30th-40th in health care quality despite paying double, triple or sometimes quadruple what the countries who are ranked in the top 10 pay? Are you content with the US being ranked 45th in life expectancy behind such great nations as Luxembourg, Malta, and Liechtenstein despite paying ridiculously more than those countries do for their healthcare? Are you content with the fact that we pay nearly 20% of our GDP on healthcare costs, with no correlative results to show for it?
Can we all at least agree that the status quo is not working and something needs to be done before healthcare costs bleed our country to death? Once that is established, can you offer something other than “ObamaCare” to solve the problem? Does the opposition have anything to offer other than opposition? If so, I haven’t heard it.

July 25, 2009 at 12:59 PM #43664734f3f3fParticipant
…but if the difference between 78 and 78.5 years of age is going to set the rest of you back a few hundred grand, just give me some morphine…
I would prefer to avoid copying the UK’s dental plan if at all possible, yikes!!
I think this is correct. The US system is often research driven, and not trying to play catch up with European longevity, but ironically, state run systems can add 0.5 years and may actually save a few hundred grand. But, I grew up in the UK and people grumbled continuously about the health care system, and it was always a major electoral issue. Dentistry used to be free as well, but that changed sometime ago. It is now private, expensive, and pushes the cosmetic smile business. Did you know that many years ago, people used urine to bleach their teeth. That might explain why you don’t see the word “snogging” appear very often in earlier literature.
