I dont have problems one way or the other since the last thing I would be doing is driving a car for money… But, I am waiting for CA to pass more laws that end up restricting contract workers , particularly contract IT workers. That would be funny. Even more of a reason to move into management then remain hands on…. Ship the jobs elsewhere.

It’s already done. The media is focusing on rideshares, but the bill bans all contract work unless it’s “outside the course of the hiring entity’s business”. Seems like a lot of tech contractors are in the crosshairs, since they often are in the same business as their hiring entity (eg programming).

I think reasonable people could have a good debate about whether Uber drivers in particular should be contractors or not. But to basically outlaw a huge swath of the contract job market seems like lunacy to me.

yup… I was reading the fine print. the uproar was over just Uber and Lyft. But the way it was worded applied to all contract work.

It’s all about the unions, the gig workers do not pay dues, which means they are not compelled to give money to the democratic party. Even the well paid and the highly paid gig workers are not paying dues. The supreme court Janus case cut off the unions (and the D’s) guaranteed income so this is just a way to supplement that loss. Teachers and government workers are now not forced to join the unions or pay dues. Many of them are just now opting out as the unions because Cali made laws that that only allow quitting one week a year.

Here’s why the gig economy law wil backfire. It is an assault on tech and California tech has been an ally of the D’s. Rideshare, carshare, air bnb and VRBO are used by progressives and the young more than conservatives and the old. It’s as if they outlawed vegans, whole foods, hybrids, you name it, the touched the third rail in self defense. Janus fundamentally will destroy the D’s in California and elsewhere, now that their primary funding source is declining, the cannabalism has begun.

Just cause you are an employee rather than an independent contractor doesn’t mean you cannot have flexible hours- that is decided by management, not by law.
Yes it’s more work/ requires more creativity dealing with employees/ Unions
but companies that will have a hard time have stupid management who well, dont deserve to be management.

The solution is to reduce the barriers/costs of hiring by socializing things like healthcare and unemployment insurance. If companies paid a known % tax rate per employee and the state took care of things like insurance, then a lot of paperwork and red tape for hiring would go away.

I’m not that into this new FLU. The old FLU saw 5 sides to every argument but was mostly non-committal. He was however mostly polite. The new FLU seems to be energized in a very partisan way.

Unions suck, so do lack of regulations. In this case the cure may be worse than the disease, but it’s a response to a disease. (See that’s classic FLU.)
