June 16, 2008 at 10:44 AM #223136AnonymousGuestGetting at the motivation of the discussion in the first place…yes, you’re right, he doesn’t fit the profile, if by by “the profile” you are referring to the meaningless image promoted by some Republicans that they are tough on “sin.” It’s all a ruse. Every politician, of course, must be evaluated on their actions – and, unfortunately, that means only the actions we know about.
Does someone’s morality affect their fitness for president? Sure. Might all the candidates be immoral, regardless of their party? Maybe. Don’t ever defer that question to the issue of which party they belong to, much less their image; such a thing is a facade that enterprising people hide behind.
And don’t let anyone frame the debate to exclude certain aspects of life as out of the realm of immoral. I’d say stealing, killing, breaking the law, committing fraud, and so on, show a lack of commitment to good morals and ethics, just as much as the inability to hold to a marital promise. It’s good to see some here have already pointed out immoral behavior by politicians that involves things other than marital (in)fidelity and (in)tolerance of other people’s sex lives.
