Looking for Chef for Cooking Lesson

Does anyone know a chef who would give my son a cooking lesson? My 9-yr-old loves to cook since age 5, and he made over half the Thanksgiving dinner by himself this year. He has a subscription to Bon Appetit, and wants to be a chef after he finishes college (thanks to Chef Ramsey on Hell’s Kitchen for that inspiration).

One of his wishes is a cooking lesson, but not one where you watch, but where you get to help with the cooking. I guess I could call a bunch of restaurants, but thought someone here might have a connection. Does anyone know a chef who would give a hands-on cooking lesson to a kid?

How about taking the family to a resort where they have cooking classes? Your son might even enjoy a trip overseas. Many hotels have cooking classes. Just call around and check.

I’ve used a personal chef named Kyle Wesendorf before. Her website is http://www.briocooks.com and she’s amazing. She comes to your house with her equipment and cooks whatever you want. Not sure how she’d be as a teacher, but she definitely knows what she’s doing.

I contacted Brio, and she charges $50/hr, 4 hr minimum, plus groceries. Kind of pricey.

The Sur La Table store in the Carlsbad Forum is a great option for kids’ classes and summer cooking camps, if you live close enough. They have a big commercial kitchen space in the back of the store and they offer weekend kids’ classes and even better, 5-day summer camps with themes like “Global Favorites” or “Delicious Desserts”…one of our kids attended a teen party/cooking class there and had a blast. The camp is a little pricey at $350 for all 5 days, but if you’re planning to do a summer camp anyway, this one would be a huge hit.
