I never participated in sports and frankly I think I might be less fucked up in some ways if I had.

Yea, I kept my mouth (or fingers) shut about Cardiff, way overboard on his kids about baseball. I knew that would not end up like he wanted.

Yeah, but your joints probably still function as intended, so look on the bright side.

Did you mean to be funny with that one. Strikes me as very funny![/quote]
Yes, I meant to be funny. 😉

I participated in sports and was good at several, but quit before I matured because I wasn’t raised right and things were getting worse. Fights and stuff like that. It wasn’t my DNA because I didn’t start like that and my kids are not like that. i was the best pitcher in my city league in middle school only maybe two position players in the league at my level, but eventually I was embarrassed to show up and thought my reputation for all that stuff wouldn’t work in high school. From what Allan says, I might have been fine. I think they would have run me off. I was a good middle distance runner but A little bit later I was half stoner half serious student. My confidence and willingess to be in the limelight was shattered.
My 7 year old has a good arm and a sense for ball placement too. I think sometimes my past dominates my feelings about competition. I started off keeping my kids pretty passive, but as time goes on have encouraged them to play for real if they play. The fun is in playing for real but with a good balanced outlook. Last year one of my kids kept a star opponent scoreless in soccer, He knocked him on his butt several times , cleanly, that’s new for us. He helped the kid up at least on one occasion. His confidence is a lot better and he is still a great kid…not a great soccer player, but he knows other kids are not entitled to go for it and him not.
July 16, 2014 at 8:53 PM #776738Allan from FallbrookParticipantRuss: Serious question, do you ever look back and wonder “what if?”.
I had two scholarships to Div I schools, until I punched a cop at a party and wound up in the Army. I think “what if?” fairly regularly. For all my “good” upbringing, I still did something colossally stupid and wonder how things would’ve turned out if I could have just controlled my temper.

I did sometimes but not much .
I was a strong pitcher at about 5-6 110 pounds and grew to be 6-5″ -190ish so , sometimes I do wonder. I got in the fastest pitcher in the West contest not even dabbling in baseball , just qualified one year at Jack Murphy…didn’t go too far though, off flat ground, no mound. Lots of guys can throw in the 90’s and don’t get far though. Nothing to lose sleep over except I wished my whole entire childhood was better! I did lose sleep for a while over being in somewhere near 4 min mile pace shape, but choked in my only race and got hurt after that and quit. That was as a young adult. Like I said , I had a hard time letting my talents mean anything good and sticking with them. Are you trying for any old man glory? I am shooting for a 5 minute mile without going apeshit with training. Just for the hell of it. I like running. Working on my 400 repeats now. I am really fit for an over 50 basketball league but family logistics with that are not ideal. Last year some guy tried to steer me onto a 50+ rowing club after he watched this huge old man run 3 miles under 18 minutes. I would have been good at rowing. What they do is a lot like running the mile aerobically. I think I’ll do something else after making this mile or giving the goal up. It’s been good for my kids, watching my wife and I team up for a short triathlon was inspiring , I can tell. She swam and I biked and did the 3 mile run.
July 16, 2014 at 9:39 PM #776740Allan from FallbrookParticipantRuss: My Army career ended in a helo crash in the late 1980s and that screwed up my knees, hip and back, which means any serious exercise, like running, went out the door.
I swim and still lift semi-seriously, but my “old man glory” is tied up in my coaching football.
Ironically, in spite of playing football and baseball in high school, the Army actually got me in the best shape of my life, including a power lifting routine I still use.

Wow, sorry to hear that. Swimming is good though, Probably the smartest thing to be doing and strength is good going forward. You can lift with your kid and that would be a cool way to spend some time.July 17, 2014 at 7:27 AM #776752scaredyclassicParticipantMy kid swam in hs. A few times came in 3rd. Was pretty exciting to see him toward the front of the pack. Now that he’s just a recreational swimmer he looks like an awesome dolphin. really, just watching anyone explode across the water doing the butterfly or a really smooth freestyle is impressive, once you’re outside the competitive arena
I think he could’ve been really good if he tried and we’d pushed him hard when young but im pretty sure he would never have been great because he does not really want to win. i remember the first organized meet we took him to at a swim club in temecua, he came in last, and he was just swimming along at a recreational rate, no faster than his regular swimming at any time. we asked him what was up, and he just said he didn’t feel like rushing. he was justa little guy, maybe 11? 12? we were like, dude, IT WAS A RACE…he seemed to have missed the memo on that…
. co worker has a hs swimmer with some scholarships and the level of commitment the family had, to outside coaching, camps, non hs meets, driving distances to get there is intense and amazing.
One thing my kid always won was the training session contests where the coach would have them swim only underwater to see who could go furthest without breathing.
He’s amazing at that! Focused and calm and for some reason enjoyed practicing holding his breath. too bad it’s not an event. he would just glide back and forth in that giant pool, like some strange fish …creepy long time under there…
hs sports can motivate parents too. part of the reason I started lifting weights now that i think about it was jealousy over his beautiful back and shoulders from all that damn swimming. i felt like i was getting left behind……

Yup, I do lift with my son. Only problem is that he’s now moving nearly 375lbs on the bench and I’m starting to feel like I should be wearing a bag over my head out of embarrassment.
July 18, 2014 at 8:29 AM #776824desmondParticipantWe were involved with “Travel Baseball” and through the years our Santa Clarita Valley team developed a rivalry with a San Fernando Valley team. Anyway I got to know the SFV teams shortstops dad, Jack Hollywood. You might know him, a few years later Bruce Willis played him in the movie Alpha Dog.

That’s one strong boy there, nothing to be embarrassed about.Funny think about football, my little tiger says he wants to play tackle football because it’s the only game where you can grab peoples legs and pull them to the ground. I told him leg tackles are really not that highly rated in the sport and that he can tackle people in soccer. He couldn’t believe you can tackle people in soccer. I said sure, it’s like when your brother was knocking them on their butts. He says, “yeah, but you can’t just trip them”.
