The white stuff that you see inside the glass tube is the UV filter coating. The "things" = Ultraviolet light; same thing in sunlight that darkens skin (and causes skin cancer in high dosages)

Thank you. Yes, I know what UV is. I just wasn't sure if florescents emitted UV. I didn't do so well in third semester of physics, particularly related to light and optics :).

I think the ugly spiral ones work well and various brands work just fine (I’m guessing the 25 cent ones are spiral). If you can get away with using those they are great. But if they are located somewhere where you can see the bulp hanging down and looks matter, you have to use the other ones and they can really vary in quality.
