ParticipantIf you own your home free and clear, you will get a check for the repalcement cost. You can do with it as you please. If you want to sit on an empty lot and use the money on something else, you are free to do so.
The insurance company can’t make you rebuild. They really don’t care if you rebuild.

ParticipantJust to be clear… You are expecting the same people who didn’t understand the loan terms in their loan documents to understand the insurance settlement provisions in their loan doc?

ParticipantI don't believe for a second they set the fires just as I don't believe we are in Iraq for the oil.
And why are we in Iraq? For the sand?

About insurance claims, now I remember that some years ago, I had a small claim. The insurance company made the check payable to me and the mortgage company. I had to send the lender the insurance check, they endorsed it and mailed it back to me. I had to sign a promise to restore the house to its prior condition.

ParticipantIt could be someone careless enough to set the fire or naturally set but I don’t think it is related to the housing downturn. Besides, I do not think the arson can escape the financial responsibilities even if they set fire on their houses intentionally.

What a Sad Day for San Diego.
