Today, the supreme court codified increased tyranny in this country by affirming Arizona’s “Show me your Papers” law.
Well. Kinda sorta. They struck down the part that made it a crime for furrinurs not to carry registration papers or other government docs.
But they kept the part allowing police to check the immigration status of someone they stop.
Not sure how that’s gonna work if those outta towners don’t have to carry papers…

June 25, 2012 at 10:26 PM #746498AnonymousGuestIf you are here legally what’s the problem? Carry your green card or visa/passport. If I visit any foreign country I’m required to carry ID too. The only people freaking out about this are the millions of illegals and their fammilies, that’s the point.
But of course the real problem is the Federal gov not enforcing employment of illegals. E-Verify should be mandatory across the board. Do you have a problem with E-verify Paramount?

Deadzone you are deadwrong.
Any conscientiousness person and patriot – particularly if you have brown skin – should be freaking out about this form of tyranny.
E-verify should be mandatory across the board and should not be left up to cities/counties to enact. But that’s a whole different story for a different thread.
What I’m referring to is suspicion-less detainment and seizures that the activist supreme court eagerly affirmed in part to strengthen the police state agenda.

Oh, and if I were you I’d stay the hell out Arizona; especially if you have brown skin.
Just an anecdote, but I have a brown skinned (Indian) friend who drove down to southern AZ for a camping trip with some friends. He got pulled over 4 or 5 times (has a clean driving record, so it’s not like he’s a reckless driver). Halfway through, he switched driving with a white friend in the car, they didn’t get pulled over once.

Do you carry your passport with you everywhere you go? How about a certified copy of your birth certificate? This does not just apply to immigrants – it’s anyone they suspect might be an immigrant.I’ve been told I look Irish – maybe they’ll think I’m someone who overstayed my visa. They can ask for immigration status of EVERYONE… Not just people who weren’t born here.
But -from what I read – the supreme court did *not* endorse the papers please part of the law – they want to see how it’s going to be applied before deciding on that portion.
I suspect the racial profiling, as done by Joe Arpaio, will prove to be unconstitutional. He’s likely to overstep good judgement. I could see him asking Scalia for papers. After all – he’s got dark skin… can’t trust these Italians. (Note – I’m married to an Italian. LOL)
June 26, 2012 at 8:56 AM #746510sdrealtorParticipantI’m driving to the Grand Canyon tomorrow and will be driving all over AZ the next week. I don’t have brown skin but I tan easily. I’ll let you all know what I run into.
June 26, 2012 at 9:58 AM #746515zzzParticipantI think its what type of minority you are (say Chinese versus Indian vs Mexican), and what type of car you drive. If you’re driving in a high end German car, you don’t get hassled much…know this to be true from many people. You drive not such a nice car, and don’t look obviously white, well, they will ask a few more questions.
I am a US citizen, but AZ is the ONLY border checkpoint where I was asked if I was American born US citizen. In CA, just asked if US citizen. Wonder if I would have been harassed if I had said no.
June 26, 2012 at 10:22 AM #746517desmondParticipantsdr,
If your in Flagstaff looking for a place to eat, great sopapillas
If you have your kids with you stop by the Meteor Crater near Winslow
Sedona is beautiful, might be crowded.
And if you want to get pulled over just go over the speed limit and see if the color of your skin matters………..
June 26, 2012 at 10:43 AM #746519AnonymousGuestYou guys are way too paranoid on this racial profiling thing. There are some obvious signs that someone is suspicious that goes far beyond skin color.
For example, if a policeman pulls over a driver for speeding, then turns out the driver has no drivers license, or upon checking it is a fraudelent license and he does not speak english there is reason to be suspicious. There are many obvious examples. If the person is not a US citizen, then they are required to carry their Passport/Visa/Gren card at all times, that is the law.
A properly trained policeman by asking certain questions could also help determine if somebody is a foreginer or not. You are assuming the policeman are either intentially out to abuse “brown skin people” or simply have no common sense. That is paranoia on your part. You ever consider that maybe a large portion of the AZ police force has brown skin themselves??
June 26, 2012 at 11:25 AM #746520sdrealtorParticipantThanks for the tips Desmond. I’ll be with my kids. I’ll be passing through Flagstaff on Friday afternoon on my way to visit my hippie sister in the Pinetop/Show Low area so that could be a good lunch stop. Passing through Winslow on the way to her also so the Meteor Crater would be a good break stop. No time for Sedona this trip and speeding wont be a problem. I’m driving my big ole SUV with bikes strapped on the back instead of the Bimmer.
June 26, 2012 at 12:24 PM #746524briansd1Guestsdrealtor, if you have time, stop at Arcosanti to buy a bronze bell for your house in Nirvana.
June 26, 2012 at 12:47 PM #746525bearishgurlParticipantI travel the both the I-8/I-10 and the I/10/I-17/I-40 route thru AriDzona annually.
This particular SC decision, for better or worse, will have no bearing on how the US Dept of Homeland Security decides to run their east-west “checkpoints” on I-8/I-10 in CA/AZ. They ask EVERYONE in the vehicle (who is old enough to speak) to state their citizenship. They also have the right of search and seizure (and even have makeshift “secondary” sections set up off-road). I’ve seen a LOT of people people pulled over by USBP/Customs for document examination on these roads in the last 10+ years, even Asian people driving expensive cars. I don’t carry papers but have always been let go (one time after a cursory search of a trailer).

The days of a passenger with bare feet hanging out the window (no A/C in cars) and loading the bed of one’s pickup with kids and a giant thermos to head interstate to grandma’s house are gone :=[

Desmond, I think we ate at LaFonda last summer. Is it next to the train tracks?
In any case, I think Flagstaff is very beautiful, even though it has grown A LOT in the last 12=20 years!
And I don’t think I’ve ever seen the meteor crater. I relation to the fast-food truck stop with dinosaur statues, would it be north or northwest of that??
June 26, 2012 at 1:08 PM #746530sdrealtorParticipantNo Arcosanti this time Brian. I’ll be heading through Payson on my way to Scottsdale. Last time I took that drive (about 20 years ago) I almost ran over a mountain lion standing in the middle of the road at dusk. Another great travel memory from the past.
