Guest
I agree that it is hard to fit multiculturalism in a nationalistic framework. Might be better to criticize nationalism.
Yes, I agree.
The nation state is a modern phenomenon. 100 years ago Europe was a lot more multicultural and borders were more flexible and changing.

ParticipantI once wrote an academic paper arguing in favor of legalizing female circumcision in the USA … I’ve always been a contrarian.

It is about hoarding behavior and access to resources; and it is as basic to human (and animal) nature as eating and procreation. It’s a survival instinct, and it’s ridiculous to think that we can change something that is so intrinsic and essential to our survival.
Aren’t you one who wants government to step in and be a civilizing force? Religion is supposed to be that also.
In the past land was limited and most important. But today wealth is created in many ways.
Societies will be wealthier if they provide a framework within which all people including immigrants can be their best.
I remember George Will saying that a unique American trait is that Americans are all the same. When you’re in, that’s it. There is no difference between an American of many generations and a “new” American. That’s the way it should be.
So don’t even think of reclaiming your San Diego (as many native San Diegans like to say). It was never yours to begin with.
CAR, I know you’re more on the left but on the topic of religion, one very Christian friend of mine refuses to accept that we are animals. We have a conscience.
