ParticipantAN, what do you think about the Westview Pkwy places? I’ve seen a couple of 2000sf newer houses (yr 2000) for less than 500K. They have HOA of ~150 or so, and MR under 100, that’s fine. I kind of like the newer stock. What do you think about that neighborhood of MM? thanks

ParticipantCommute wise, UC and Mira Mesa would be first choices…(except buying a small townhome in LJ zip code – near LJ Village Square). Schools in those will certainly be good enough too. Now the problem is finding a decent enough house at a decent enough price… I suppose given the schools and commute advantages we should be able to compromise on size (for 500K range).
Edit: A cursory look tells me that there was no SFR currently for sale in UC for ~500K, and just a handful in 600K range. Probably we can’t afford UC area unless we buy something REALLY tiny or a townhome with huge HOAs. It seems that Mira Mesa it is…API scores are better than I thought for those schools. Not that the API is the be-all and end-all necessarily but still.

Participant
Clairemont -I think many are just too old – more than 20 years old, no matter how well patched and updated.
HAHAHA 20 years ? That’s spankin’ new ! Our house is now 61 years old !
Of course, we have, over 12 years, remodelled the whole thing so it is far from “outdated” cosmetically.
Really, the biggest “real” issue in the area, other than decor, are the sewer lines. The pipes are just old cast iron and if you disrupt the dirt aruond them, they crack. This is only a $2K-to-$5K issue, though, to re-route them. Not a big deal.
Bedrooms are small, but so are kids.
They are framed with real fir timber, not hemlock. Wood stregthens as it ages so 60 year old fir is some seriously stout stuff. I just like old houses. I think it is because they put smaller houses on bigger lots back then.
That’s what I like the best here – my neighbor’s house is 24 feet from my house. 12′ from the lot line on either side ! It’s a small house, but I don’t feel cramped because of the outdoor space.
Some of the areas above Costco were built on landfill, so you have to be careful there.
You’ll kiss alot of frogs shopping in Clairemont, but there’s princes in there somewhere.
