La Costa Valley by most accounts has better schools than Carlsbad. The major difference is the high school. La Costa Canyon vs. Carlsbad is no contest and the overall district (San Deguito)has 7% econ dis vs. 20% in CBad.

For elementary schools it’s the Encinitas Union school district. Most of the new developments around Carlsbad have decent elementary schools, but the middle/high schools are not comparable as another poster mentioned when comparing La Costa Canyon to Carlsbad. LCC is considered much better.
