I look at demographics and % econnomically disadvantaged as my key indicators. Calavera Hills school is worse than SEH schools but the houses cost 20% more. Makes no sense.

ParticipantMagnolia is acceptable, but not “Carlsbad” quality. It’s better than Calavera Hills. Econ Disadv kids make up almost 22% of Magnolia; 25% of Calavera; 8% of Pacific Rim, and 19% of Aviara Oaks. It’s funny that most think of Aviara as the nicest, but it pulls in a lot of riff-raf. Pac Rim is best in CBad.

La Costa Valley by most accounts has better schools than Carlsbad. The major difference is the high school. La Costa Canyon vs. Carlsbad is no contest and the overall district (San Deguito)has 7% econ dis vs. 20% in CBad.

ParticipantReally? So would you say that with growth of suburban families to the area…it stands a better chance inthe long run than Cbad? It is alittle confusing with the zip being 92009 (carlsbad) yet the schools are San Deguito…is that part of san marcos?

ParticipantLa Costa Valley is in the San Dieguito Union High School District which is the Middle/High School District that covers parts of South Carlsbad and Encinitas/Cardiff. For elementary schools it’s the Encinitas Union school district. Most of the new developments around Carlsbad have decent elementary schools, but the middle/high schools are not comparable as another poster mentioned when comparing La Costa Canyon to Carlsbad. LCC is considered much better.

No bias here since my kids don’t go to any of these public schools nor would I choose a school solely on test scores and demographics (the test scores are the demographics). Basically look at the percentage of Hispanic kids (and ‘riff-raf’) going to the school and you’ll arrive at the decision most of you people will make about where you’ll live and send your kids to school.

ParticipantSo…the 92011 zip code has really good schools…what about the areas with the older elementaries like magnolia…any older neighborhoods that are holding their value? I just want to make sure I cover all the promising areas of carlsbad before I settle on one area….so far the zip 92011 seems to be the top choice.
