ParticipantJust returned from Escondido’s North County Fair…found easy parking at 7 a.m., strolled the mall for 30 minutes while looking into 2 supposed door-buster “deals”, decided both items were pieces of crap (and still over-priced), then wandered out to the car, spending nothing, and came home.
Gone was the madness of yesteryear. Folks–unless the Invisible Man is out there shopping today, this Black Friday is going to go down as one of the worst ever.
Good riddance to the consumer-driven economy!! Hello big-time recession!!

ParticipantJust got back from my neighborhood Vons. It was empty — to be expected on a day when most people are eating Thanksgiving leftovers. But there was NO ONE in line at the inside-Vons Starbucks, and this is a phenomenon I’ve only seen in the last two weeks or so. Used to be at least 10 people in line no matter what time of day.
The msnbc article gave props to CVS. I really like CVS. I used to go there when I’d visit my sister in the Wash D.C. area. I’m very glad they expanded west. They are going to be the home of the “Minute Clinic” you guys might have read about — where you can be seen by a nurse practitioner for minor ailments at a low cost. This is important to me because I am going to lose my health insurance at the end of the year.
As for Christmas shopping, I am a real cheapskate. I buy deals online or at the Sports Arena swap meet. My mall addiction was cured about two years ago.

ParticipantNoticed that the "Deals" today aren't really that great this year. Use to be there were a lot of freebie's. This year, there are virtually none.
Unfortunately, I just pulled the trigger on a 52" LCD for my parents. I guess I'm joined the "one of them" (RE stereotypes, hummer jokes, blah blah blah…but their CRT tube finally gave in after 10 years). $2000, not bad. And the good news is that people aren't fighting over them (guess with the credit/stock/housing mess).

ParticipantI took my kids to a mall near us here in upstate NY (they wanted to see what all this “Black Friday” hype was about – and I had never been on this day myself). Parking lot was jam-packed. Everyone angry and aggressive trying to find a spot.
Inside the mall…. people everywhere. Crowded! My daughter bought a book and stood in a line of three people. That was the longest line in any store we went in all day. Place was mobbed, but very little spending going on. We bought three things all day. Really, there was nothing to buy. Only spent money at Borders, JCrew, and Gap. And we did not buy anything over 25$… even at JCrew.
We stopped by Target on the way home…same… no lines whatsoever.

ParticipantPreliminary statistics show this years Black Friday way ahead of last years, and much better than the analysts projections. In my area (eastern LA county), every store was jammed and parking almost impossible, especially the Fry’s. Police were there directing traffic all day long. People were parking two blocks away and walking. I have never seen it so crazy. Maybe the last hurrah before recession?

ParticipantOnce again the American consumer has proven us wrong and charged their CC up to the hilt.
However, while there is no doubting this Black Friday turned out much better than expected does this mean that consumers will be purchasing strongly throughout the holiday season or were they jumping on all the deals they could today and will not go back and shop anymore for the rest of the season. We will have to wait and see…
