Hmmm….being “the back up” on a house you want must be kind of like being told “no” by the girl that you really like.
What happens when the girl changes her mind and says “yes”, is the “feeling” still there??

March 31, 2010 at 2:06 PM #533764AnonymousGuestUpdate: Thank you guys for the light-hearted responses to my impromptu venting on your site. You are all very nicely welcoming although I’m not from around your area (San Diego, I found out later). I am very familiar with San Diego, though. Been there and enjoyed it immensely.
My take on the back-up offer issue is, most likely not worth it. I’ve just found a similar lifestyle house … ~0.40 acres. It’s as if the property that I was lamenting about is a mirage. What house? I’m happy with the one I found not too long after that “defeat.” No, I did not become desperate. This is a well chosen house I got a contract on now.
One thing I learned though is that before an Open House, a property may already have offers. I think that was what happened when another offer beat me to my Open House-day offer. In this case where I have the contract, I had the offer on the table before the Open House. One learns very quickly.

March 31, 2010 at 2:14 PM #533770AnonymousGuestscaredy – been there a few times. Does not get easier, either, until you detach youself. The very first time I made an offer on my dream house and got outbid, I actually cried tears b/c I fell in love w/the house. Since then I have learned to not be emotional. Adopt a Dr. Spock attitude until it closes escrow.
Yep, this is me now … avoiding reacting too much … not counting chickens before eggs are hatched … keeping my emotions in check … stepping back so as not to be too close to the situation … waiting for the ink to dry … although I’m already drawing up (in excruciating detail) how I want to landscape the front yard.
