So when’s your sabbatical gonna be?
I am afraid that won’t work for me. if I told my boss I was going to take 6 months off to work on my cars, my boss would tell me “best wishes for your next opportunity at your new company”…. As the only one left from the acquired company’s senior management, I think my boss is counting the days I find something better so they can take over..maybe I can rest and vest a little longer and make it to my 3rd year.

JPJonesParticipant
Lol….
So one of my senior mobile engineers, the one that I previously said was working out of his RV/trailer traveling the US, decided to resign from my company. He’s going on a 6 month hike from the mexican border to the canadian border.
I was like, man that’s cool. I wish I did that when I was younger. So I tell my boss’s boss that his last day will be next week. To my surprise, my boss’s boss told me to ask him if he was interested in going on a 6 month sabbatical. I didn’t even know sabbatical existed at my company. I was told, “not officially”…. lol….
Sounds like your boss knows how difficult/impossible it will be to replace a senior engineer. And here we are kicking around the idea that remote work is on the way out. Maybe we should kick harder so it goes away?

I know how hard it is to replace a good senior engineer, but I didn’t think it was possible to compete against “I’m going on a 6 month hiking trip”. He’s taking the sabbatical deal. Lol…

I am sad to see him go for 6 months but I would totally do it before I settle down. Going on a hiking trip from border to border is one of those once in a life time events, and job security 6 months after he’s done is probably a once in lifetime arrangement from a once in lifetime cool boss and boss’s boss.

ParticipantTotally agree wrt the article FormerSanDiegan–even if it passes–it won’t make much difference–but it is interesting to see how desperate politicians are becoming to try to appease their constituents wrt housing. Until they find a way to create more land, I kinda think it’s going to continue to be a challenge for them–especially in highly desirable areas like San Diego.

Cool story. When one is faced with opportunity like that it seldom comes again in one’s lifetime
