The problem with putting very large companies in Urban settings instead of corporate campuses is it makes it very expensive and disruptive to scale up when you need to.
Myself I would not want to work in anything over two or three floors (or where you need an elevator to get from one place to another within the company).
IMO trying put everything in one spot is a bad idea in general. I don’t know why anyone is trying to revive it.
What we are seeing now is a hybrid of sort. Some people may think the UTC area or the LAX area, or Irvine spectrum as cities, but they are not.
Northern Virginia where Amazon is locating is a little more dense but it’s next to DC.
Even NYC outside of Manhattan is sprawl with lots of SFRs. NYC is less dense than Paris, France.
But anyway, the “cities” are winning big, economically speaking. But they are losing politically. It’s becoming a huge issue of taxation without representation. Lots of data in the article below.

The big city paradox: They’re getting richer but losing electoral clout

OK HQ2 now not being built in NY, so how about SD?
Just kidding.
February 14, 2019 at 11:20 AM #811774FlyerInHiGuestThey’ll probably go Boston or another city.
GE is in Boston. Young creative people like to be urban in environments, or very close.February 14, 2019 at 11:56 AM #811778The-ShovelerParticipantIMO a lot of them would rather live else where (I hear it all the time from my colleagues in San Jose), but it is where the Jobs are (for the moment).
The Tech pendulum swings in both directions sometimes.
February 14, 2019 at 12:20 PM #811782FlyerInHiGuestWe shall see. But San Jose is not the city. It’s an expensive old suburb comprised of old houses that need doing up, as the Brits would say.
February 14, 2019 at 2:13 PM #811785The-ShovelerParticipantLOL well it does look like SD will get some of the Jobs and investment.
February 14, 2019 at 4:08 PM #811786FlyerInHiGuestBased on the Amazon statement, it sounds like amazon was worried about support from certain political leaders and the subsidies that were promised.
After much thought and deliberation, we’ve decided not to move forward with our plans to build a headquarters for Amazon in Long Island City, Queens. For Amazon, the commitment to build a new headquarters requires positive, collaborative relationships with state and local elected officials who will be supportive over the long-term. While polls show that 70% of New Yorkers support our plans and investment, a number of state and local politicians have made it clear that they oppose our presence and will not work with us to build the type of relationships that are required to go forward with the project we and many others envisioned in Long Island City.

Amazon already has a pretty big presence here …
The other company staffing up here is… Walmart Labs (their ecommerce group)….They are right next to where GoPro is in Carlsbad
Oh well, NY doesn’t need those 25k jobs to make up for that lost tax revenue, right?…. …. AOC probably is proud…. More room for Green Deal Jobs…. ha ha ha. Dumb idiots
February 14, 2019 at 6:00 PM #811790FlyerInHiGuestIf you read the full statement, you will see that amazon plans to continue to expand in NYC in an organic way.
Flu, why aren’t you crying about $3 billion subsidy to Amazon in NYC alone. In comparison, Solyndra got $$500 million loan guarantee.
Green jobs are better than coal jobs.

I am old enough to remember when the conservative is against targeted tax subsidies….
February 14, 2019 at 7:31 PM #811792spdrunParticipantYou’re all assuming that Amazon actually wanted two HQ2 sites, as opposed to narrowing it down to one site being the end game.
February 15, 2019 at 7:20 AM #811795CoronitaParticipantWell to be fair, at least if you’re a tech worker, NYC and NJ would be a shithole place to work anyway imho. So it’s probably better this didn’t happen, for Amazon at least.

She was only elected by low voter turnout in a very small district so maybe she was never really popular in greater NY anyway.
But yea I would rather work for Amazon in SD than NY any day.
