On normal cars, this is like a 15-20 minute job for an amateur since it’s located in the engine… But thanks to German serviceability engineering at it’s finest, mine is located under the car, right next to the fuel tank….and it was nearly impossible to get out… 3 freaking hours, later…here’s something disgusting…. Here was the fuel that was coming out of the “clean side” of the filter (the fuel that is suppose to go to the engine and burn)..

I’ve had Dodges where the FF was bolted to the frame under the car, easy to replace.
I’m at a loss for words for that pic. How can clean gas in your tank pass thru (what I assume you are saying was) a contaminated filter and come out that dirty? I’m not sure I understand…[/quote]
I suspect perhaps the tank itself has a lot a crap from years of fillup. That or the stations I go to regularly have serious issues. And being an old filter, it probably didn’t do that great of a job filtering the junk out.
The fuel filter was right under the gas tank, and bolted with a “triple square” bolt…The official way to replace it is to drop the right side of the fuel tank according to the service manual :(. Fortunately, my hands were small enough.
