bob2007: “Hmmm… Psyc degree, hard to get a job….
I have a few friends in this same situation. Seems like a PHD is required for them to be considered for even the lowest level jobs. Sad but true.”
Hi, bob. A PHD is required in order to be a “clinical psychologist”. I am a school psychologist. There is a lot of crossover in what we do, but school psychologists don’t do in-depth psychoanlysis and hypnotherapy and we provide services to the student population. California is one of the few states that allows me to practice without having my PHD.
Here in California, most of the grad school programs that offer the school psychologist credential are Master level programs. There are very few programs in this state that offer the Doctorate. In light of that, I don’t think my problem is that I’m competing with a lot of PHD applicants.
At some point, I’ll probably go back for my PHD (after the kids are in college), but I intend to get it in clinical psychology. That way my earning potential will be even greater.
