We have someone in our group who makes the exact
commute you describe and has been doing so for
at least 12 years (current tenure at my company).
I have tried (many years before the real estate bubble)
to determine what his possible motivation could be.
Only answer so far: “My wife wants to live in Temecula
and because houses cost less”
Imagine if he could had saved even 50% of his real commute costs (gas, depreciation, maintenance, etc) and invested
in an average mutual fund returning 5%.
Don’t even get me started about the thousands of
hours (over 12 years) wasted sitting in traffic on the I-15.
I am sure he is not an isolated example.
At the end of the day, I want to respect others personal
life decisions, but situations such as this one just
don’t pass the smoke test.
