We were blown away by the price of tires, too. Four tires for our minivan cost $723.72 after all was said and done. For a freaking minivan! :(
Oops, I forgot to add… the $360 included taxes and shipping, but I still had to pay another $50 or so for mounting and disposal of old tires. The good news was a Hankook rebate of $40 or so, so my net cost wasn’t too bad. I know, Hankook is no Michelin though.
I had put on a set of Michelin Pilot A/S Plus at about $150/each for daily driving, thinking it would be a great all season tire with great traction in case I drove north, and decent tread life that would last me at least 3 years… Traction was good and and decent for an all season. Treadlife, however was horrible…Lasted me about 1.5 years. The tread wore uneven, and I had my alignment checked and rechecked. I had a set of Continental Extreme Contacts that had much better life, but were noiser.
So I’m not sure Michelin’s are all cracked up to be…
Well, my craigslist purchase fell through. Tires and wheels were good, but they ended up being 225/50/17…and ends up rubbing against the upper suspension arms in the rears (can only do 225/45/17 max). Bummer…Some other guy had 225/45/17’s with about 5k miles on it. I decided to say screw it and just get new tires from tirerack.
Taking a que from AN, I did some research and just ordered from TireRack some Kumho Ecsta LE Sport for a daily. Now that I have another SUV, I don’t need all seasons anymore for this car as a daily…. Tire appears to have gotten decent reviews…..Tires were cheap $86/each, with $50 rebate for 4…Road hazard was included from the manufacturer. TireRack is going to dropship it to the installer for $58, and I found a place to do it for $12/tire. Probably can go through 2 sets of these versus 1 set of michelin’s. The michelin’s didn’t last that long either.
