There was a cute small town, called Solvang (sp?) on the way to santa barbara. It’s a Danish styled small town, that had a few nice bed and breakfast places. If you can find lodging there, it’s a nice short trip. (Your kids might get bored).

SF for the weekend would probably be too much for you (especially if you have kids).
