I abstain because my vote I abstain because my vote doesn’t count. Only Rich’s counts and he says “no”, per the other thread on the same topic.
CDMA Eng, however, should be removed because he supported Italy in the World Cup and the only good thing you can say about Italy’s team is that they weren’t France.

Rich… If my assumptions are correct… Your grandfather was a WOP. WithOut Papers… And I am guessing your family was from the Tuscany region of Italy thus the name Toscano… Such as Brandisi to Brandise and all other italians that assumed the name of thier region as opposed to thier real italian name (e.g. Vito Corlone in the Godfather)… And the like.
Such bashing of patriots and pisanos should not be tolerated and thus I appeal to you, as a pisano, to ban the German-named American Team supporting SDDuuuude…
He has done nothing on this board for the last 3 months but inflame good natured football fans with his mindless analysis of World Cup.
After all… the best thing about the Italian team was that they at least didn’t play like Americans! 😛

Ha ha, sorry CE, your Ha ha, sorry CE, your assumptions are partially incorrect… my father’s family did indeed bail on Tuscany, but it was back in the 1800s and they didn’t come to the US, but (apropos of the World Cup) to Uruguay. My dad moved from Uruguay to the US in the 1950s. So while I retain the name, I am too many steps removed to feel kinship with the Italians… bash away, I say.

The paragraph below is plagiarized from Yahoo best answers and covers pretty well the variations likely to be found in “El Castellano hablado por Ricardo”. Portunol is cool, examples can be found in the movie “El Gaucho” , which is was at one time available at Kensington Videos.
Rioplatense is mainly based in the cities of Buenos Aires, Montevideo, and Rosario, the three most populated cities in the area, along with their respective suburbs and the areas in between. This regional form of Spanish is also found in other areas, not geographically close but culturally influenced by those population centers. Rioplatense is the standard in audiovisual media in Argentina and Uruguay. To the northeast exists the hybrid Riverense Portuñol.
I suggest you read this website. It pretty much covers all the differences with the other Spanish varieties and it’s pretty accurate.
In Uruguay, though very much influenced by the Buenos Aires variety, there’s more of a mixture.
Look at this examples:
Buenos Aires
Vos sentÃs el frÃo del pampero.
Uruguay
Tú sentÃs el frÃo del pampero.
or
Tú sientes el frÃo del pampero.
or
Vos sentÃs el frÃo del pampero.
I could give you lots of other examples if you need them.
Another very important feature is in phonetics.
The LL / Y sounds are different since they’re pronounced as the initial sound in ‘show’. And even this varies in Uruguay where some people say ‘sh’ /ʃ/ and others use the middle sound in ‘pleasure.’ /Ê’/
Something else.
S before consonants becomes a sound similar to English / h /
Example:
Esto es lo mismo – ehto eh lo mihmo
