There are quite a few church-affiliated groups doing charity and proselytizing work in Haiti. I think that the charity is good but the proselytizing is shifty.
If the USA one day becomes poor, how would we feel if rich Chinese missionaries or other foreigners were given entry visas to come and proselytize their beliefs to us in our heartland?

So, I wonder if any other So, I wonder if any other piggs try to take the emotional knee-jerk reaction out of their charitable giving, and apply cold, long-term strategy to it just like they do all of their other major financial investments? I mean, isn’t charity just another form of asset allocation towards creating the world that you want to live in? Why don’t people donate consistently to causes that they want to see perpetuated? I figure out what top 3 causes I care to support every year (scholarships for banjo refurbishers, universal latin education, preservation of the Largest Ball of Twine in the World, whatever), use charitynavigator to get insight as to who might do that best, and give each of them a sizeable donation as I rough out my taxes so I get the best tax deduction. I prioritize drives that have matching donors to get more bang for my buck. This has the benefit of having something concrete to say to solicitors (“I only do planned donations, but if you give me your website I will be happy to consider it at the appropriate time”), I can target a fixed %age of my income and budget for it, and finally, the money is already in the hands of a charity I have researched and trust (I won’t get swindled by a fake charity) when disaster strikes. Plus the charities get the benefit of a steadier stream of income if I donate consistently from year to year, and *they* can plan better budgets, get volume discounts for purchasing bulk goods, get the right equipment/meds/food at the right time, etc.

COLUMBIA, S.C. – When things looked their darkest for Gov. Mark Sanford — when he was in danger of being impeached for running off to Argentina to see his mistress — his best insurance policy may well have been South Carolina’s lieutenant governor, Andre Bauer.
Lawmakers knew if they removed Sanford, they would end up with Bauer, a fiercely ambitious Republican with a reputation for reckless and immature behavior.
Now Bauer has folks shaking their heads again, after he likened government assistance to the poor to feeding stray animals.
At a town hall meeting Thursday, Bauer, who is running for governor in his own right now that Sanford is term-limited, said: “My grandmother was not a highly educated woman, but she told me as a small child to quit feeding stray animals. You know why? Because they breed! You’re facilitating the problem if you give an animal or a person ample food supply. They will reproduce, especially ones that don’t think too much further than that.”
