I echo what flu said about “quality” of Chinese made products. Chemicals, pesticides. I have a friend who has come down with Parkinsons. She worked as a chemist for years at a major company tha makes everything from health care, pharmaceuticals to beauty products. Many of her colleagues also suffer from neurological diseases, brain cancer, etc. She said the prevailing knowledge amongst the doctors and chemists is that petrochemicals and pesticides cause these diseases.
China grows food using more than 3x pesticide levels than we consider safe. I have many Chinese friends whom DO NOT buy Chinese made products wherever possible and never buy the food. This is because they have Chinese mothers who read the Chinese papers and 10 years ago started reading about quality issues and people getting sick. People need to take it upon themselves to start learning about the chemicals that go into all things in our daily life whether it be the bed you sleep on, the sunscreen you put on your children, in your shampoo, to the food you eat. There were people getting sick in Florida from Chinese made sheet rock.
It doesn’t have to be more expensive to buy non China grown food. You just have to read the labels and shop wisely. Trader Joes generally carries local fresh food, but you do have to be careful reading the boxes on the packaged stuff as ingredients can be from China.
Finally, on non food products such as beauty products, sunscreen, etc…just because it says its organic does not mean it doesn’t contain chemicals as not all ingredients have to be organic. Not regulated by the FDA and not required to test for safety.
zzzParticipantI researched W/D for a while and LG is considered one of the top by Consumer Reports. I went with the top of the line LG that isn’t a Steam set. I really didn’t think I’d use the Steam option to justify the cost so don’t get sucked into the pretty colors. One of the biggest differences between the sets that save you a few hundred bucks and a slightly more expensive one is often the stainless steel drum. I have read that the stainless steel drum is an upgrade well worth spending. I think most of these W/D will have electrical problems down the road with all of their sophisticated panels, but this is the world we live in, from cars to W/D. So any one you get, budget a few hundred bucks over the next 10 years to swap out that circuit board.
The bad reviews on a lot of the front loaders has to do with people not using common sense on their washer. I believe a lot of people complain about the mildew. You HAVE to leave the door open. I was wiping it down religiously when I first got it and leaving the door open but found that if I didn’t wipe it down, it would still air dry very quickly.
I checked out Sears outlet and they don’t offer that great of prices, as well as a number of the smaller shops. You get maybe $50-100 bucks off retail. You can get those same discounts just shopping a sale of brand new appliances.
Negotiate! I bought my set from Best Buy and negotiated the deal for 20% off and free delivery.
If you buy energy efficient, there is a rebate from the water district.

zzzParticipantHaving just been searching for months in the rental market, I can attest that rents may be lower for large apartment complexes, less desirable neighborhoods, or less desirable units, but single family homes in areas like Mission Hills or even the west part of North Park in homes that are modern and what I’d consider nice are not coming down. If anything the nice homes are getting snatched up quickly and the not so nice ones are staying on craigslist. I found over several months of looking, nicer homes are holding their value just fine if not in fact going up because there just aren’t that many nice homes to rent.

zzzParticipantbottom line, if a company cannot build a sustainable business, it should fail. it doesn’t matter how they screwed it up. it doesn’t matter if it builds good product. if you cannot find a way to run in the black, it is not a sustainable business model.
we are on a very slippery slope, who gets to play god and pick winners and losers? what industry is next? everyone seems to be getting in line these days and can you blame them? lets bail out luxury retailers next.
