Participant
So if the government cares so much how come it took them 6 years to figure this out. How come they don’t do a tailpipe test of my VW that is 13 years old and on the sticker said upfront that it pollutes 3 times more than the average car when brand new? My guess is that VW paid some kind of pollution tax way back then and decided they didn’t want to pay it anymore.
You’re complaining that it took the government too long to find out? So you want stronger oversight, is that what you’re saying?

Participant
VW is in this position because of excessive regulations/taxes.
Regulations are a form of taxes.
This looks similar to Los Angeles in the early ’80’s. Take away the regulations, and it would look like that again. No thanks.
VW is in this position because they’re cheating liars.

So Hillary doesn’t elicit visceral hatred from the right? Really?
I clearly remember lots of visceral hatred from the right towards Hillary. I remember wondering where it came from.
I think I figured out where it came from. The same place where the visceral hatred that the right wing has for so many people came from: The right-wing noise machine is constantly filling the brains of the gullible with whatever it takes to make them viscerally hate whomever it is that the right-wing noise machine wants them to hate.
The right-wing noise machine is a juggernaut, funded by the super rich, without which the right wing would have trouble finding votes.
The left-wing noise machine is a rusty, beat-down tricycle with two flat tires, funded by… not much.

And it also goes to show you that being very “intelligent” doesn’t mean you’re not a complete idiot.

ParticipantI watched the Roman Polanski movie, “The Ghost Writer” the other day. A fine movie willing to stand on its merits without any “action.” I liked it a lot. It generally got good to very-good reviews, and the few critics who gave it mediocre marks commented on the lack of action as a downfall of the movie. I suppose your average viewer needs some action, but I really liked this move, and ones like it, because they don’t throw gratuitous “action” in there to spice things up. I frequently find myself waiting for the action to end so the movie can get moving again.
I’d love to hear any recommendations for good, solid films that are more realistic than the ubiquitous action movies out there. Old or new, American or Foreign.

Participant

Yeah, if you’re planning on being there a while, having a backup wouldn’t hurt. My spring was only 4 1/2 years old. But it was installed by Pardee, so it’s possible it wasn’t done correctly. If you get a backup, might as well get some purpose-made winding bars while you’re at it. Cheap insurance against an accident caused by an incorrect bar slipping out.
Wow. Yours broke in 4 years? I think mine were still original for about 10… I guess they don’t make springs like they use to. Which online store did you order from? The same one as the guy in the youtube video?
I used 365garagedoordoorparts on amazon. The parts were cheap, and they work so far. But they promised 5 days max to be at my door, and it took 11.
If I had to guess, I’d say my springs didn’t last because of shoddy installation by Pardee. But I don’t really know.

ParticipantDang, flu, too bad I didn’t see this a couple days earlier; I would’ve recommended that same video. My spring busted a couple weeks ago and I went (superhero voice) TO THE INTERNET!!. Found that very video, ordered the springs and the winding bars online, and did it myself. $43 for the two springs and the winding bars. They bungled the shipping, and I had to wait a week and a half, but other than that it worked out good.
In any case, for anyone else considering the project, I second the recommendation of that video. The guy shows you everything you need to know to do it safely, and he has a nice demeanor. Also, the winding bars are quite inexpensive, and I would highly recommend buying a pair. Winding the springs, especially near the end when they’re really tight, is a tad unnerving, especially having heard the stories, and knowing I had the right tools made me more confident that I wasn’t going to screw it up. I didn’t wear a helmet, but only because I didn’t think of it. That’s a pretty good idea.

ParticipantOk, thanks for the tip. I am paranoid, but I probably haven’t conveyed that to the doctors.
I’ll let you know how it goes.
zk
ParticipantThanks, flu. I have an appointment. You called it on the availability. Her next available was October! But that’s fine, that’s when I’m due for my next 6-month check.
I really appreciate the recommendation. Thank you.

ParticipantThanks, flu. I have no condition right now (except some actinic keratoses on my forehead that any old dermatologist can take care of). What I’m looking for is a new dermatologist who will give me a careful and thorough skin cancer screening every 6 months.
It’s good to hear that UCSD doctors are patient and take their time. I have no problem waiting for an appointment, as I can schedule my every-6-months exam well in advance.
Any recommendations would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks

ParticipantThanks for the offer, flu, I really appreciate that.
I haven’t checked with UCSD; I generally use Scripps. They’re close by and in my ppo. That’s a good idea though. Expand my search a bit. Problem is, I can’t really tell just by looking at their online info. Most of them will have propaganda on there saying how thorough their exams are. But in real life, it generally turns out not so much.
If your doctor knows someone he/she thinks is really good, I’d love to hear it. Thanks.

ParticipantIt’s just an asking price; it doesn’t mean anything.
