Participant
Anyone here considered “taking a vacation” back east as a result of the nuclear problems?
If you fly, you’ll get more extra radiation from being at altitude for 8 hours (round trip) than you would from staying here on the west coast.

Participant
Quote from a doctor who works around radiation every day:
“I really think it’s the wrong message. We really have to take this seriously,” DeMeo said. “Even low dose radiation exposure can increase your risk of cancer. Some people act like it’s a food group and it’s harmless. It’s not.”

DeMeo sells radiation protection suits. Not exactly an unimpeachable source.
I never cease to be amazed at how people are unable to discern what’s truly dangerous and what’s not. Every time you get in your car, you’re taking a far bigger risk than anything that radiation from this incident will cause you here on the west coast. And if you drive over the speed limit, text while driving, drive without paying full attention or drive after just one or two drinks, you’re adding an amount of risk that compares to the risk from this radiation incident as Everest compares to the pile of salt I put on my eggs. Which pile of salt is also more dangerous than said radiation.

ParticipantFor the record, I won’t be sending money. I won’t be worrying all that much, either. There are millions of people suffering on our planet at any given moment. The people in Japan just happen to be in the news right this minute. If you are that worried about the Japanese right now, and you really understand the amount of human misery there is on Earth and worry about all the misery equally, then you’ll be worried pretty much constantly. Worrying about it kinda seems pointless to me. Doing something about it, of course, is another matter. But you can only do so much about so many things. I save all my charity money for one charity:

Participant

Good time to buy unless a lot of radiation leaks. If that happens all bets are off. BP was a great buy at the height of the oil spill crisis.
(I know nothing but) I’d agree with that. A total meltdown at a nuke plant would probably be followed by a pretty good meltdown of Japanese stocks. And then that might be a good time to buy.
I’m more worried about the people from the nuclear fallout at this point.
Don’t worry. That doesn’t help. Send money.
