Forget that. What about all the weapons of near infinite destructive power that would be loosed upon society? How the hell is a shotgun going to protect against an F-14 or a 50-megaton bomb with multiple exploding warheads?
Partypup, if society breaks down, you better be looking to join a gang. Preferably one with a lot of illegally obtained weapons.
Hell, a shotgun won’t even protect against your basic pickup-bed-mounted .50 caliber machine gun:

You can’t eat gold.
Gold is nice to have in relatively stable societies, but I can’t see it having much value in a period of chaos.
