ParticipantI’d call public transportation more than ‘a hassle’. I don’t know about you but spending 4 hours a day to commute 20 miles in each direction is a pretty piss poor quality of life.
Do you have an extra 4 hours a day to get to and from work?
Why do you live 20 miles from work? Let me guess, you either have a McMansion or a McMarpment. I chose to rent a reasonably-sized place 10 minutes from work. I’m sure you could do the same.
Approximately 60% of the gas used in this country is used for a single person to drive themselves to work. We could all buy smaller vehicles, live in smaller places closer to work, or live with roommates.
San Diego is the perfect place to use a scooter. Could you imagine how much more pleasant your commute would be if everyone was driving a scooter? We’d immediately quadruple the capacity of our highways. Commuting would be a veritable dream!
Doubling the price of gasoline won’t kill anyone. It will just force us all to stop wasting resources with impunity and destroying the environment. I look forward to many more days where the price of oil jumps $10/barrel/day.

ParticipantI’d love to see $10/gallon gasoline. It would cause short term pain, but eventually most of us would get used to taking the “school bus” to work just like we did when we were kids.
It’s not like I (or most anyone else) has to drive to work every day. We just do it because taking public transportation to work is such a hassle. Double the price of gas and many, many more people will make that sacrifice of getting up a half hour earlier to catch the bus or the train or whatever. There will be a short-term shortage of mass-transit vehicles, but the free market will fix that soon enough.
More expensive fuel/energy leads to a much better society in my opinion. Much less waste, pollution, and conspicous consumption and more focus on things that actually matter.

ParticipantNew furniture set for living room: $4,600
New flat screen: $2,300
New sound system: $1,700
New Gourmet Grill: $1,800Party to show off all my new gadgets: $700
Total: $11,100
I recently received a nice bonus and decided to reward myself with some new toys. It’s been a while since I’ve rewarded myself like this so I thought “what the hell. Go for it!” Luckily, the slowing economy and all the discounts enabled me to stretch my bonus further than I had planned on.
