ParticipantLADWP has a DC power transmission line coming down the coast from Washington State,
they use one cable and use the earth as a return, fascinating really,

ParticipantWe got a Windows 8 touch screen laptop for the home, I really like it. we also got a cheap Android Tablet which was a lot of fun learning/downloading the Necessary flash players etc.. I plan to write a few app’s for it just for fun.
But really the Windows-8 machine is a lot more practical for getting stuff done I can see the Windows tablets giving Android a run.

ParticipantThey are shutting down a lot of farms,
I think our snow pack is only about 25% of normal
OK maybe we could go another year or two before they get real drastic, but it cannot continue too long without a lot lot more rain,
IT would have to rain constantly for about 30 days and nights to get back to normal IMO.

ParticipantI have seen estimates that say As much as 70 percent of all residential water use in LA goes to landscaping.
I am not scared but I fully accept rock and bark landscaping.
OK maybe a few Cacti

ParticipantFor what it’s worth one of the guys we hired from Canada was in his late fifties.
I see engineers at Cisco in their 50’s all the time.
I think you can get away with that in tighter labor markets like San Jose, I tell you it’s really crazy up there.
Don’t know how much longer that will last but if you have software talent and you really need a Job (and cannot find one in SD of course), that’s the place to go.My two cents given the two options, (20 percent pay cut and haul my own stuff to TX) or San Jose I would head north, but that’s just my opinion.

ParticipantI see quite a few soccer moms in SD area.
I think there are almost as many stay at home parents today as there were in the 70’s
Most of my friends I grew up with, their spouse does not work full time or at all in most cases.

ParticipantI don’t work for Google or Facebook or apple so don’t know what they offer.
Ours was close to a moving van expense and a free apartment for 6 months
I have heard of a google engineer turning down 500K salary though because he was getting more at google

ParticipantIt was not easy making a living in the 60’s.
It was not uncommon for both parents to work.
It was probably about the same percentage as now but that is just what I remembered, but of course I can not be correct.

ParticipantMy Father worked 6 days a week, My mother a little less, but sometimes she work two job’s.
You must have not been around in the 60’s and early 70’s
The-Shoveler
ParticipantBoth my parents worked through the 60’s and 70’s (we were not rich).
it actually got a lot easier in the late 70’s 78-80 due to inflation made the house payment less than a car payment, that is when my mother quit working.
But everyone would tell you that is just not possible, (it was).

ParticipantThere was some movement to split California into 5 or 6 different states (sponsored by some guys in San Jose area)
I am not sure that would end well were it to occur.The-Shoveler
ParticipantDon’t know about Socal so much but at least in the bay area, there are probably five or six start-up’s working on the next big thing for every old corporation that relocates, if fact it seems weird but I see more older tech companies expanding in San Jose area. Does not seem fair actually, they should move some of those down here LOL. We just hired three guys form Canada a month or so ago to relocate to San Jose.
And yea we did give them a relocation package.

Participant” it’ll be very hard to convince a decent/good programmer from another state to come to CA with our extreme housing costs and other taxes/fees…”
We get resumes all the time.
