I want something new and high tech. Not interested in the hotel Del. It’s old and creepy creaky.https://youtu.be/rnGpSZmj-cA%5B/quote%5D
We’ve stayed at the Hotel Del a few times.
After the last trip, we decided we’d never stay the night again. It was during a heat wave – it was like 100 in Coronado – and the room had no A/C. I don’t think anything in the hotel had A/C, as we sweated through dinner and other activities that evening.
The carpet in our room was wet, and we really felt like the place was not maintained properly.
I have read that management of the hotel has been turned over to a major chain now, so maybe it will improve.
But I think we’ll just stick to visiting for dinner and drinks and save our overnight getaways for other hotels.

I guess I voted No, by saying no to any private school for my 3 kids. But I was lucky enough for 2 of them to get into cal state and afford it for cash, and the 3rd is looking good too. I dont feel personally scammed, other than all the woes I had with my own student loans.
I do get frustrated seeing folks pay a ton for a history, english, or art degree. Absurd. But it’s their money. This is where the Republican in me (not that I have a lot) comes out. Buyer beware. If you’re stupid, you’re bound to spend your money unwisely one way or another. Colleges seem a better receptacle of stupid money than other places.
Another time I was unhappy was when I considered going back for a second degree, and found out UC and State would charge MORE for a second degree! Theory being I guess that the state was chipping in for the first one, but I’d have to pay full rate for the second. I felt this was absurd and I was already paying a LOT for my first degree!
I also remember that my university implemented quite a surcharge on tuition my senior year to pay for building a new Student Union…that wouldn’t open until after my senior year. I was extremely unhappy about that. Seniors should have received a pass on that surcharge!
This thread is reopening old wounds…

See what the average person doesn’t understand is the fvcktard Progressives are totally capitalizing on Fvxkface Trump to turn the Party of D in California into an extremely Fvcktard party going the other way
I’m not that into this new FLU. The old FLU saw 5 sides to every argument but was mostly non-committal. He was however mostly polite. The new FLU seems to be energized in a very partisan way.

I noticed that the last few weeks too Josh.
Something has changed.
September 17, 2019 at 7:01 AM in reply to: More creative ways to stop people from earning money from gig jobs… #813596svelteParticipantI have not one ounce of sympathy for Uber and Lift.
They really snuck into the taxi industry through lies and deception. Does anybody remember when they claimed that they weren’t a taxi service but a “rideshare service”? My arse! The driver was NOT going to the location anyway, so there was no “rideshare” to it!
Taxis have to be registered in many locations, but Uber and Lyft skirted that also. To me, the situation was very unfair to taxis – not that I’m a big taxi fan.
So I turn a deaf ear to them.
I have also watched with some concern as a large number of jobs have turned to temp or contract work. Many places that employ professionals now do it through contracts, avoiding the need to pay benefits. I guess I’m OK with that for high paying jobs, say north of $100K a year, but with low paying jobs that are directly related to a business’s core product, I’m not OK with that. I am a little worried about the folks that just want to work part time…this will make businesses more likely to want full time employees only.
Does this law overreach? It appears to, though I haven’t read it word for word. Did something need to be done? I believe so.
Maybe adjustments will come to make it less draconian and more where I’d like.
September 17, 2019 at 6:54 AM in reply to: Why the hell is parental wealth taken into account for student aid? #813594svelteParticipantWe went through this also.
I wasn’t happy either.
But I can see the other side of the fence, as flu points out.
Never did resolve my position on this subject. It is what it is I guess.
svelteParticipant
I have yet to see the use case for 5G with today’s technology and applications. There’s very few applications that need the bandwidth and the higher frequencies reduce the coverage area/antenna or need more towers. Eventually someone will figure something, but I don’t think it’s worth the cost at the consumer level yet.
My research the last few months led me to the same conclusion.
I am about due a new phone, but will sit 5g out this time. Im not a bleeding edge beta tester type of guy in most situations. Got better things to do with my money.
svelteParticipantI moved around a LOT when I was a kid, state to state.
And you’re right scaredy, every move was a risk I would fall in with the bad crowd. In some cities (usually rural areas that didn’t typically have new folks in town) only the bad crowd would accept the new kid in town. I chose to spend my time in my room in those situations, but others with more need for social interaction may have chosen a different path.
True my folks put me in some risky situations, but they also gave me the confidence and morals to resist. And I did.
I have siblings who did not resist. And the family is still paying the price for that to this day.
svelteParticipantYou know i liked warren back in 2011.
But since then she has taken a number of positions that make it unlikely i would support her now.
svelteParticipantLet me try an extreme example of how your childhood can affect who you are, but you should still be held accountable for your actions.
There are many examples of murderers from less than ideal backgrounds…charles manson and jeffrey dahmer come to mind… but they should absolutely be held accountable for their actions. No doubt about it.
And yes there are folks from great backgrounds who murder also. Menendez brothers come to mind. But a bad childhood increases the odds of extreme bad behavior.
svelteParticipant
Just a general comment not aimed at anyone,
Blaming your failures as an adult on your parents is really lame IMO.
Agreed, and i hope you dont think that is what i said.
But the experiences one goes thru in life certainly help form the lens through which one sees the world in general and ones place in that world. Look at the first child second child syndrome.
My wife had a pretty darn rough childhood and she turned out wonderfully. The lens through which she sees the world is different than mine, and some or alot of that is due to the turbulence she went through. Not saying it is good or bad, it just is.
The nature vs nurture thing will never be sorted out completely, too many variables. But both contribute to who you are.
svelteParticipantMy favorite t-shirt from the 1970s was the drawing of two ducks screwing midflight with the corporate slogan underneath…”Fly United”.
That is all.
svelteParticipantTo paraphrase supertramp, such deep thoughts for such a simple life.
We are truly all still children at heart, scaredy. Thats why spoiled rich kids rarely turn out grear, they still expect the privilege they had as a child.
I am positive that i am who i am because of my meager childhood with moral parents.
I need to remember that others have been down a different path, seen different things, and that has made them who they are also.
svelteParticipantha ha I had forgotten all about the 35mm canisters!
Everybody had them!
Thanks for the memory resurrection, scaredy!
