Yep I agree.
My son leaves SF in two weeks. His family is moving to a much smaller N Cal city. They are keeping their jobs albeit taking a salary hit (their employers aren’t dumb) but feel the quality of life improvement is worth it.
They are going to rent for a year to see if they truly like the new area then buy – they’ve already saved up the down payment.
This is such a change for him, he was always all about the big city. Having kids changed his perspective, as did the lockdown. They spent months with their 1 year old only being able to watch the traffic go by out the window, not leaving the apartment. They want a back yard and more space between neighbors.
svelteParticipant
5th Ave looking pretty bad. Scroll down for the video:
I’ve never purchased anything in my life at a high end luxury store. But I appreciate their beautiful storefronts, and they can be interesting to browse a little.
Looks like the storefront of the Macy’s in spdrun’s photo is also boarded up. The most expensive rents in the USA don’t get you physical security. But the Burger King is “NOW OPEN”
Hmmm. That video was taken 8/6. Look at 1:16 – Saks Fifth Avenue was all boarded up.
Now look at the live view I took just now 8/16 at 9:15 AM San Diego time, which would be 12:15 Manhattan time.
Saks Fifth Avenue is not boarded up! Not many people on the sidewalks, but definitely not boarded up.

Your friends are probably old.
Probably white.
Probably dopey.
can’t argue with that. ha ha.
svelteParticipantholy cow, I posted go kamala go last night and my republican friends came unglued.
The garbage they responded with tells me she worries them very VERY much. I mean I thought Hillary got under their skin!
The biggest thing is “she’ll take away my guns!” followed by a lot of other claims – just to see what Fox would say I watched it last night…its like my Rep friends took crib notes from Fox News last night…almost word for word.
When I rebutted them point by point, they started in on false news about how she’ll abolish guns and many other things…I had to start deleting all the false claims.
The misinformation is at a level I have never seen before. It is just astounding.
The right is worried. Very worried.
svelteParticipantA good writeup on Why Kamala

svelteParticipant
Don’t know much about her really but she seems very much in the middle (not to the extreme left).
Probably a good choice for Biden.
Despite all the noise and headlines etc.. the Majority still want a middle of the road candidate to vote for.
svelteParticipant
he chose his partner same way I did–went with the fiercest one he could find!
I didn’t go with a shrinking violet myself. Gotta have some fire in the belly.
As Billy Preston said, nothing from nothing leaves nothing.
svelteParticipanttotally agree with you scaredy!
As soon as he announced it, I smacked myself in the forehead…duh! Of course she’s the right choice.
He needed an attack dog and she is it…a former DA, how in the hell can anyone fault that? Biden can sit back and be the mellow anti-Trump and let Harris tear into Trump like a pit bull. Very happy with the choice!
It had just been dawning on me the last few days that him taking her on after she attacked him during the primaries is going to make him look stronger…like he doesn’t hold grudges…he appreciates a strong woman…and gives him a chance to say that he has made mistakes in past decisions, we all have. There are things I’d take back if I could.
Bass was dull for sure. I think what started scaring me about her is her lack of national exposure…would she know how to handle herself under ultra-scrutiny? She hadn’t truly been vetted like Harris has – what if there are skeletons nobody has dug up yet?
And Harris – the daughter of Jamaican and Indian immigrants – oh my how can you excite the left any more than that? They are going to go ape sh*t that the VP is female, black, asian, immigrant, everything all wrapped up in one. And every voter wjth an Indian background is going to vote you can be damn sure. Well maybe if she was gay also the left would get even more excited.
I would have been pissed had it been Warren. Just don’t like her.
I read an article yesterday that black leaders warned Biden that he’d better pick a black female or lose the black vote. He listened. I think that’s wise.
This is going to energize Democrats and I do believe win quite a few of us independents over. Very happy right now!
svelteParticipantWell there it is. Kamala Harris.
svelteParticipantLooks like we have five finalists…
Bass
Duckworth
Whitmer
Rice
HarrisLooking at the list, I’d be fine with any of them.

svelteParticipantNot sure it would fly in my house. My wife regularly goes through dates and purges our shelves of anything that is even a month out of date. She’s a stickler about that.
If I came home with a load of stuff about to go out of date, I’m pretty sure it would short circuit her brain.
svelteParticipantGretchen Whitmer appears to be back in the running.
When first looking into all of this a month or two back, she was one of my top picks – glad to hear she’s being seriously considered again.
Karen Bass and Gretchen Whitmer are my two top picks right now. I’d be happy with either.
svelteParticipant
Over 55, veganism very rare in the usa. old people dont change, for the most part. Republicans and meat eaters dying every year. the republicans may be replaced, but the meat eaters are on the decline.
One thing that keeps me motivated to continue avoiding beef – passing the slaughterhouse on I-5 while traveling to northern california. I can smell that place about 5 miles before we pass it and the smell and sight of the place is just disgusting. I want nothing to do with that industry.
I notice they put the Harris Ranch steakhouse several miles to the south of the slaughterhouse – they don’t want to smell it, either. And the row of trees they planted along I-5 to shield the motorist’s view of the slaughterhouse? Those ain’t doin’ much.
If I ever passed a chicken slaughterhouse I guess it might shape my opinion on poultry also.
Finally: I can tell you’re a CA and NY boy at heart scaredy because the midwest is still chock full of big meat eaters. Young and old alike. It goes hand in hand with hunting. There may be a decline in meat eating, but it isn’t going to disappear tomorrow I can tell you that.
svelteParticipantI’m with sdduuuude…
I was raised to treat men and women totally equally, and I do.
I’ve had about equal number of female bosses vs male bosses over the years and have not really noticed much of a difference with rare exception when I’ve come across a manly man and girly girl. Most of them were just flat bosses who behaved about the same as their counterparts of the opposite sex.
I’ve also noticed that more often than not I end up with more females on my staff than the m/f ratio within the company would suggest. I’ve often wondered if that was by chance or if there is something going on that I’m not noticing. It could be (a) mgt has noticed that I treat all equally and help direct females my way, or (b) perhaps the employees have noticed and have come my way because of it. Or perhaps it is chance. I’ll never know.
Likewise away from work I treat people the same and our set of friends don’t really include any manly men or girly girls…we tend to gravitate people who treat people as people.
As much as I’m not for affirmative action (it does exactly what I’ve been taught not to do – it treats people differently) I do feel it is high time we have a female at the top of our government. There are as many good female candidates as there are men, and I’d like to see that glass ceiling (a term I dislike but it fits) broken.
The one and only female boss that I felt favored females, her and I had a long talk about it. She ended up agreeing with me that she did, and made a genuine effort to be more impartial in decisions. I can respect that. I remember she even laughed when I explained how it is unacceptable to be biased toward either males or females in all aspects of life save one – because if we were unbiased in all aspects we’d all be bisexuals.
