svelteParticipant

If for no other reason than the above, I’d recommend you convert to digital before you start losing tapes to old age.
Ugh. Ok.
It may sound unappetizing now since you are pre-grandkid, but I’m pretty sure you’ll enjoy the moments they spend on your lap watching old videos. And be thankful you took your collection digital.
You’re a man who enjoys his family and I have no doubt that trait will continue in the coming decades.
svelteParticipant
a) Price range – Current house will sell for about $200k (yes, the east coast is cheap). I can chip in another $200k and go up to about $400 total.
b) They’d like to have access to dining, movies, art and theatre. To give you an idea, they are considering the Villages in florida but worried that it’s in the middle of nowhere.Personally, I think a downtown condo would suit them best, but that’s out of their price range and too close to me.
Close to art/theater but not downtown are largely conflicting goals.
If you found a place close to the trolley or coaster you could make it work though.
Lots of 55+ communities in SD county…you just need to figure out how far you want to drive to see them. ๐
Oceana (Oceanside), Vista Del Mar (Oceanside/Carlsbad), Lake San Marcos (San Marcos) and Seven Oaks (Rancho Bernardo) come to mind.
svelteParticipantI converted all my parent’s 8mm and all my home VHS to digital about 2 years ago.
I am very glad I did and recommend you do too.
Not because you’ll watch them often – I don’t because as you accurately point out they can be painful to watch – but because of the next generation.
We have grandkids now who are trying to figure our their place in the universe and family tree. They are just getting the concept that they will mature and that, at one point, their parents were little kids who lived with their parents. They’ll jump up on my lap while I’m at the computer and request that we watch old family movies. Watching old films and saying “there’s your dad when he was your age!” helps make it all click in their mind and certainly makes it more real than mere words.
If for no other reason than the above, I’d recommend you convert to digital before you start losing tapes to old age.
svelteParticipantYes it is.
(a) How much do they want to spend?
(b) What characteristics in a 55+ home and location are important to them?
svelteParticipant
what if i prescreened and rejected people who i thought would get crazy. maybe have a “only wine” policy or something….
I don’t know – it seems to me that the problems I’ve seen haven’t been with the bride and groom (or whomever you would be dealing with beforehand) but with the cousins and drunkles and yay-hoos that must be invited (because they’re family!) then proceed to drink themselves into oblivion.
And thinking about it more, the problems I’ve seen haven’t really been at indoor receptions but outdoor receptions. Maybe the problem relatives bring their own ice chests? I don’t know the reason.
We saw it coming during one that turned into a mele so we cut out early and went to a nightclub for the rest of the evening. The next day the bride and groom told us we had made the right decision – things got ugly. ๐
svelteParticipantPS – I have a friend who is closing on a home in about 3 weeks and, since he’s come to me for advice through the entire process, I’m pretty sure he’ll be asking for a home warranty company recommendation soon.
So I’m following this thread closely. ๐

engineer student kid was loving the build quality. interesting difference in tolerances in construction, from say, an ipad… weighs a ton…hums like a washing machinealso, the thing can be heard throughout the house.
When I was a kid we didn’t have a typewriter, but we would sometimes borrow one from friends. The electrics with a ball head were my favorite.
Whenever one was in the house, I’d spend hours typing things – anything – I was so enamored with it.
I had no clue that I was preparing myself for my career attached to a keyboard. ๐
svelteParticipantRenting it out for a wedding is one thing. Those are in the daylight and everyone is sober.
Renting it out for a reception is quite another. I’ve been to a few receptions that have gotten out of hand.
svelteParticipantSometimes I think the only reason this site exists is so that 15 of us can talk.
svelteParticipantWonder what the top line would be if they removed security guards.
I am betting it skews that line considerably.

svelteParticipant

LoL, $500k isn’t even enough for my house in the ghetto, much less yours in that swanky zip code.
And there you go again…Trying to act all humble and such…. I mean come on, you’ve got a front and backyard lawn, you have A/C, and you have a lot of walls…..
