ParticipantHomePath mortgage on a foreclosure? 3,5% down for owner-occupied.

Participant800 numbers are no longer needed in 2012 (IMHO). There’s no advantage to callers anymore:
(a) most landlines have free, unlimited national calling, toll-free or otherwise.
(b) most cell plans use minutes for calls to 800 numbers, same as non-free numbers
(c) int’l calls to 800 numbers are either blocked, or charged at the regular rateGet a memorable number in a local area code and call it a day. Google Voice allows you to search for available numbers by phrase or set of digits. If you’re catering to int’l callers from a certain market, you can also get a GV number abroad.

ParticipantDidn’t the War Zone nickname stem from a war between bikie gangs in the 60s? i.e. something that’s been long forgotten.

ParticipantOB has good sidewalks and has the ability to walk to interesting places (downtown, beach, etc) without 4 or 6-lane roads being involved. Those kind of areas are generally safer from a traffic perspective.
I’d say pot is kid-neutral, neither friendly nor unfriendly. Unless someone was air-dropping bales of it on a town, in which case the town has bigger problems.
Kids aren’t monks. They don’t need isolation and shelter to grow up, nor is it good for them. Seems like bearishgurl is one of the few posters here who “gets” it.

ParticipantPot is basically available everywhere. Unadulterated pot is also essentially harmless (unless a large bale of it is dropped on someone’s head from a 5th story window).

ParticipantIt’s a minority opinion because the majority of Americans are both rock-dumb-stupid, and deathly afraid of the wrong things. Kid is more likely to be squished by a car than hurt by any of the “colorful characters.”
Were I to drop $1.5 mil on a house, it would probably be in a part of Brooklyn, NY that’s remarkably similar to the way you describe OB. Minus the pretty cliff views, sadly.
15% of families with kids in school means 1 or 2 per block, probably 10+ within walking distance. What’s the problem? And what’s wrong with renters — they don’t do a criminal background check when you buy a home, y’know? Last I checked, home ownership isn’t a criterion for being a decent member of society.

ParticipantMens rea would be difficult to prove in this case under the law you cited. Does CA have any specific laws that cover keeping of nuisance dogs?

ParticipantReligion of birth and race aren’t choices. Profession is. I for one have NO problem vilifying someone because of their CHOSEN profession.

ParticipantIf I told my realtor I was looking for a family-oriented, family-friendly area and they took me to OB, I would fire them immediately.
I wouldn’t unless I was a ‘fraidy cat who didn’t want his kids to have any contact with things that aren’t pure, boring, and suBURPan. zOMG! Kasey and Lloyd might encounter a HOMELESS HIPPIE … smoking a JOINT! How HORRIBLE!
Then again, I’m a dirty hippie at heart and would be more comfy raising a family in parts of Brooklyn, NY, North Park, SD, or Venice Beach, Philly than in a non-walkable suburban pesthole like Carmel Valley.
Do agree on any of the beach areas you mentioned 🙂

ParticipantIt would be very expensive to build another tunnel thru it and its truck-only tunnel is too dangerous to share a passenger train with.
Yaddadee, bladdadee. The Swiss are building tunnels DOZENS of km long while we spend trillions fighting in Middle Eastern sh!teholes. It’s a matter of priorities, and perhaps corruption, not money. America lost its will some time after the 60s.
What annoys me is the thought that people will actually use the rail. I would be willing to bet that the TSA will make it a nightmare to board the thing, and at that point it will be just as quick to drive.
Other than the occasional random check, TSA is relatively hands-off as far as rail in the US. I don’t see them x-raying bags or using body scanners on Acela; and that wouldn’t be too hard to implement. (Some high-speed trains in Europe have bag scanners.)
It’s pretty hard to hijack an electric train since if it happened, cutting power to the overhead catenary would stop the thing, plus it doesn’t have freedom to move off the tracks and crash into things. And if “terrorists” wanted to wreck a train, they’d do better by “accidentally” slamming a truck into a bridge rather than bringing a bomb aboard.

Participant(a) I’m writing this from the DC-Boston overnight train, doing about 110 mph through NJ. LOVE not having to drive or deal with the suck of flying ca. 2012.
(b) Source of power (I.e. electric) is relevant, since it can use clean sources like nuke, hydro, or renewable
(c) Agreed with the idea of upgrading the coastal rail line to 3 tracks and medium speed standards. Say 100-120 mph were possible, electrified. Where it’s owned by a private railroad, pay THEM to upgrade. There seem to be more people at intermediate coastal stops than out in the desert!!
(d) with (c), modify the route to run direct to SF rather than to Oakland, of course.spdrun

ParticipantCan someone explain CA law, as regards Prop-13… Am I correct that once assessment drops, it can’t be increased by more than 2% per annum, except if the property is sold? Or does it only mean that it can’t be increased by > 2%/yr above the original level at purchase?
