ParticipantAnything wired is on a 1gb switch, yes.

ParticipantDon’t be so sure about this. Assuming a 1Gb LAN, the improvement in seek time might make it worthwhile. Not to mention the improvement in reliability.

ParticipantHow about an old netbook ($100 on EBay or less) that’s set up to e-mail you every half hour? Remove the battery. If e-mails stop coming to your mobile, you’ll know it’s time to call your neighbor to check what’s going on. There are also automatic dialers that dial a phone # if power is lost, but they will only work if your phones aren’t dependent on power (i.e. not cable or VoIP).
Any battery/UPS system under say $500 won’t run an A/C for long. A/C’s draw 10 amps minimum, so 1200W or 100A from a 12V battery. Meaning that assuming a 100% efficient system, a car battery will only run it for about half an hour. Not to mention that the transformer has to be correctly rated, and output waveform needs to be correct to power a motor as opposed to a switching power supply in a server!
Self-starting generators are also expensive and need to be mounted outside, unless you want to gas your dogs.

Participant^^^
Nope: if the app has access to HTTP and location data, it doesn’t need to use Apple’s map solution. BTW – I don’t like Apple’s lock-in any more than you do, but facts are facts.

ParticipantWhat about a NAS using SSDs in RAID config? 🙂

ParticipantVoltage is the same. They just draw less current. Kind of like you don’t need a different transformer for a 100W and a 20W lamp, both plugged into 120V mains outlets.

ParticipantGoogle Maps will still be available as an app if you want it. This isn’t a reason to buy or not buy the iPhone.

ParticipantWait…Let me get this straight. On another thread, you hate steve jobs and hate apple…But you use a Macbook…What am I missing here?
Apple’s desktop OS’s aren’t crippled like iOS is. I hate Jobs for his walled-garden concept, which OS X isn’t a part of (for now). I can boot up a clean install of OS X, go into Terminal, and do what I like, and it’s actually less burdened with authorizations and controls than Microsoft’s products.

ParticipantSK in CV — most SSDs use a SATA connector, which is the same in laptop and desktop drives. Drives are generally 2.5″, so you mount them in a 2.5-to-3.5 cradle in a desktop.
There are a few PATA SSDs for older computers.
Using them in a 3.5″ desktop bay would require an adapter cable, but would otherwise work.

ParticipantNot for me, since I can buy several TB of drives and backup drives for that price. But if speed and reliability is paramount, this isn’t bad. I’m thinking of going for a 128G SSD in my Macbook since the HD died over the weekend, and it’s about $90.

ParticipantGet a quote for the carpet replacement from a reputable contractor.
Charge them for the amount of the quote, minus an allowance for wear and tear.
Do whatever you like with the money.spdrun
ParticipantAgain: if you plan to replace the carpet, why not go with non-porous flooring or even tile? This is a rental house, not the Hilton, right?
Carpet rules out: hikers/mountain bikers, people with kids (and you can’t discriminate!), messy people, and meth cooks (OK, you can and should discriminate there!).

ParticipantGet an estimate. Send the tenant the bill … then put down Pergo.

ParticipantAssuming rent is $1500, $500 per pet + 1 month would fall within the law. Or just charge the guy “pet rent” of $50/mo per pet, which is for sure legal.
