ParticipantWhy not snap up a bunch of rentals in less-nice areas and use them to finance rent on a two or three bedroom apt in a nicer part of town (read: near the beach)?
The American perception that you have to own the place where to live to be “somebody” is asinine.

ParticipantYou should go to the book club, dress in black from head to toe, and bring some Anton LaVey to read 🙂 Intolerance is oh so Christian — shouldn’t she be trying to convert you rather than shunning you?

ParticipantRegardless. Warranty companies have to turn a profit. For this reason alone, you’ll come out ahead ON AVERAGE if you do the work yourself.

ParticipantAfter he mentioned the extra ripoff fees, I’d have booted him out the door, and told him that his boss was free to collect the $60 fee via small claims court if he dared. Don’t feel bad – the guy is an employee, and gets paid regardless.
If someone offers a “warranty” on a used item, run quickly in the other direction. 99% of the time, it’s a scam or bordering on such.

ParticipantMountains, good schools, cold climate, and decent economy/lower prices than CA. Have you all considered New England?

ParticipantWhy would you want to find the few Charbucks hidden around town? Crap coffee, annoying servers, not to mention being a characterless chain that drives real coffeehouses out of business.

ParticipantSquat250 – you scare too easily. If someone wanted to carjack or rob you, they wouldn’t bother responding to a CL ad. They’d just shove a pistol in your face when you’re stopped at a light, or steal your car while you’re buying gas (the latter happened to me outside of Wash, DC).
And if you met a block down from your house, no one would know it from any other one on your street. Hell, meet in front of a house of a neighbor who annoys you if you feel something bad may happen 🙂

ParticipantYet despite the “peacock mentality”, I’ve met a bunch of super down-to-earth people in SD County. Mostly ex-East Coasters or foreigners, but who in SoCal is actually a native?
If anything, if you’re financially responsible, you can live much cheaper out here than in the desirable areas of the East Coast.
Good luck on your move to MN.

ParticipantDoubt the ramifications would be anywhere close to that extreme. Though in a just world, legal trolls like the textbook company’s lawyers would be locked up for wasting public resources to compensate for their employers’ stupidity.

ParticipantIs “misleading the public” listed as an offense anywhere in the criminal code? Unless the statistics were given or supported under oath, I’m not sure what the charge could be. And if it were a crime, 99% of politicians would be rotting in jail as I write this.
The only outcomes would possibly be Presidential impeachment (no point, a few weeks before the election) or Solis’ regisnation in disgrace.

ParticipantA lot of people on here seem to mention buying income property outside of CA.

ParticipantSeems Mr. Market agrees with that sceptical assessment — Dow rose a bit, NASDAQ and SPX fell. I will say that the participation rate rising by 0.1% this month is good news.

ParticipantPeople have lived in Manhattan, Cambridge MA, and coastal CA long before the “brainwashing” became fashionable. Speaking for myself, grocery stores deliver, and a lot of other stuff is available within walking distance. No bus or subway required.

ParticipantSarcastic yaphole-flapping aside, explain why real estate prices aren’t increasing uniformly across the country, despite mortgage rates being uniformly low? Look at average time to foreclose.
This being said, I’m almost hoping for a Romney win, despite the fact that he’s an obnoxious little prick in almost all respects. Why? ‘cos I like his “foreclose on the bums/kick them and their misbegotten spawn out on the street” idea for working through the real-estate correction. Not crisis. Correction.
