ParticipantKick whoever installed the carpet in the scrote.
Then kick yourself in the same spot, repeatedly, for not removing the carpet upon purchase.Carpeted bathrooms = worst building idea ever. I’d recommend a match and some kerosine.

ParticipantNot anymore – the buildings that still need it use rectifiers. But Con Ed provided DC service into the early 2000s for some buildings.

ParticipantCan you give examples of what you’ve seen online in SF in that square-foot and price range?
Nevermind … seeing a bunch of buildings in SF even on Realtor.com.
spdrun
ParticipantBecause SoCal people might irritate you to the point of self-defenestration. Plus, making money in certain industries is easier in SF than in NYC or SD.

ParticipantGotta live somewhere even if you have homes elsewhere.
These aren’t too bad:

ParticipantSF has other reasons for being desirable other than later nights. Tech scene, proximity to nature, less harsh climate than NYC.
Yea, it’s a middle ground between NY and SD, but it’s not a horrible compromise.

Participant@AN — East Village = no decent public transport, and it feels like most of SD with exception of maybe PB is deadsky after 9 pm. SF is more of a late-night town, though nothing compared to Manhattan or Brooklyn. SF also seems to have a lot of damn smart people, better (the best?) tech scene, more cultural events, and location on the edge of an urban zone if you head north.

ParticipantThe 275 sf studio is a bit of an extreme example. Made possible by the recent tech bubblelet (hoping this ends as well as the ca. 2000 NASDAQ runup and the Fecebook IPO). Though I have to say that it’s strange to see asking rents in meh areas of SF near Manhattan levels.

ParticipantSF has a lack of condos. What can you buy for $400k that’s much better than that studio? For $1800/mo, you can rent a 2 br in the hood or a 1 br in an ok area.
Or you can buy income property in Oakland for 7-8% cap and use the income to offset your rent in the city.
The market in SF is much more f’ed up than even Manhattan. I have a studio apt that could be a nice 1 br, but if I wanted to live near Columbia University (decent area with slightly bad rep), there are 2-3 br apts that show up for under $400k periodically.

ParticipantI don’t like Carlsbad.
What’s your problem with the immediately coastal area of C’bad? Decent beach, and some very cute buildings. It’s not Maine, the Hamptons, or even the Jersey Shore, but it’s not horribly unattractive in my book.

Participant… I see your political leanings don’t jive very well with the bulk of folks inhabiting all of your fav cities (except for Austin – is it red or blue??)
And except for Burlington, VT. Vermont is liberal in some ways, but it’s mixed in with a streak of old-school New England conservatism and love of personal responsibility. It’s not nanny-state, take-but-not-give California “liberalism.” Oh, and if you’re into that sort of thing, you can carry a pistol legally without a permit, though it’s considered impolite under many circumstances.
spdrun
ParticipantTell me, what does $400k get you in SF?
No point in buying for $400k in SF. Rent, exploit the ridic. landlord-tenant laws, and buy a few rentals across the bay or in points south to fund your rent.

ParticipantOne of the things about SF that I think is an eyesore is the huge amount of overhead lines on many streets
Nah, it can be done. Keep in mind that Manhattan has some very rocky parts, and almost all electric is underground. SF also has a lot of overhead wiring to power electric buses, which actually serves a useful purpose. As far as kids in SF, keep in mind the city’s high % of gays. Yeah, yeah, gays can marry and have kids. But fewer of them do than straight couples, on average.
Lastly, pretty views — how about this one (taken before the storm, d/k what it looks like now)? It’s NYC, but a lot of people say Seattle or SF when they see it:
