ParticipantDirt cheap as compared to the US, as is the case in most of Europe.

ParticipantApart from the ages of the homes, it’s not as if you can’t find similar deals in rural Vermont or some parts northern California/rural Oregon. We’re not talking about Parisian pricing here.
As far as bureaucracy and taxation, France is far from being free of it, rather the opposite. Though the good thing is that there’s a much bigger tradition of lawbreaking and evasion there, so the effects of the bureaucracy tend to be tempered.
Vive l’anarchie!

ParticipantPaying to benefit this country is one thing. Paying Federal taxes for wars in worthless Middle Eastern toilets is quite another. And no, catching Bin Laden wasn’t worth a single dime.

ParticipantLast I checked, Pelosi was a Federal Congressperson, not a state legislator. This being said, the pigs in DC are a big part of the problem. Keep in mind that CA sends much more per capita to DC than it gets back. The situation with the flyoverian and Southern states is generally the opposite (with the exception of IL and MI, I believe).

ParticipantCongratulations!
Thanks! We’ll see – could be 8 other offers on the place getting the same runaround.

Participant“Regular” HDTV with a small-form-factor PC hooked up to it. A lot more flexible than a “smart HDTV” and Pirate Bay-ready to boot 🙂

ParticipantNever bow to pressure from a broker is about right. A few months ago, I put an offer on a short in MV at ~90% of ask. Broker kept saying that I’d never get it unless I offered ask or above. Well, today I got a call that the winning bigger failed to perform, and could I please send an updated proof of funds.

ParticipantIt really depends what part of TX. Just like many Piggs probably wouldn’t want to live in Bakersfield. aka Texas West.

ParticipantFrankly, in an ideal state, R.E. taxes would approach zero, and all revenue would be from income and sales tax.

ParticipantAssuming I own a place free and clear, what’s wrong with being able to pull out say 75% of the equity in a flexible manner? HELOCs are only a danger if abused by lenders and debtors.

ParticipantInternational pressure can go a long way, even if Federal pressure didn’t exist. Regardless of the possible fate of the slaves, I’m not changing my opinion that the US would be better off today without legislators from the South and Southern Midwest obstructing progress in DC.

ParticipantA gradual increase in freedom, as happened in Brazil since 1888. (As also happened in the US South since the 1950s.)
Actually, had there not been a war and if emancipation had come from within, there would likely have been less push to create racist laws for purposes of revenge.

ParticipantI’m bringing rotten tomatoes. Not because I expect the movie to be bad, but because “Honest Abe” was one of the worst things to happen to the US.
We should have let the South and Bible Belt go straight to Hell in 1861 — withdrawn all troops, relinquished all forts, and left them to f**k themselves. Slavery would have ended naturally due to mechanization, and this country would be much less politically divided right now.

ParticipantWhy not just do a better job of taxing income of foreign and out-of-state entities? Real-estate tax on either commercial or residential properties is essentially a regressive tax.
