ParticipantI made sure to put decent appliances (of those that needed replacement) before renting. Not sure if I’d go out of my way to replace appliances on Black Friday. If anything, I’d be worried that my tenant would see it as an inconvenience and hassle rather than a joy.

ParticipantThey weren’t when I was a kid. I think the key (which my family did) is to pack light, be spontaneous, and enjoy the trip rather than stressing about planning.
Unless you’re going to a third-world country, you don’t need to bring all of the equipment to be self-sufficient for six months!

ParticipantIf you’re driving a rare semi-custom vehicle and it breaks down in rural Yoknapatawpha County, Mississippi, chances are that you’ll be dealing with the local mechanic as well as the RV place over the phone. Granted, you’ll probably be reimbursed in the end, but AFAIK most RV rental places don’t have national infrastructure, so you won’t end up with them sending out a wrecker, towing it to the local franchise, and handing you the keys to a replacement vehicle.

ParticipantMy family rented an RV and went around the country one summer. I remember that the thing broke down about multiple times in the month we had it. Including a few days spent in the town of Black Duck, MN while the local truck mechanic sourced a replacement transmission!
RV’s are heavy, complicated beasts, and I suspect that a lot of rentals aren’t super well maintained. Buy one in winter, fix it up, play with it for half a summer, then sell it in August.

ParticipantAlcoholism isn’t a major cause of ill health in the US — I don’t think that a 50% increase in alcohol consumption over US levels would have a major effect on public health. If anything, fewer stressed-out teetotalers might be a good thing. Sit back, drink a glass of wine after dinner and chill out a bit.

ParticipantWonder if there would be a market for renting out Title 20 compliant fixtures to new homebuyers till they replace with E26. 🙂 Seems that would be a lot more ecological than the homeowners just tossing the compliant fixtures into the trash.

ParticipantCA Renter — how is renting SFH homes any different than buying anything else (like cars or power tools) on credit and opening a rental firm? Damn right that either example is a business, and all should benefit from loan interest deductions. If anything, the legalities and maintenance on real estate make it more work than some other rental businesses.
Want to keep homes affordable for primary residents? Make it a policy not to give loans where the cost of interest + taxes + expenses is greater than the market rent for the property.
Landlords seldom overpay, since their goal is to make a profit. The people who overpay are usually primary owners — because OHMIGOD IT’S GOT A PERFECT VIEW, and the YARD is soooo BIIIIIG, PER-fect for little Bratty and Bethie to PLAY OUTSIDE after SCHOOL. AND the KITCHEN TILE, so RETRO CUUUUUUTE! zOMG GUSH!

ParticipantPush the bulb in a bit, twist about 1/8 turn counterclockwise — you’ll feel it pop out. Think of it as a “keyhole” screw mount, except the screws are on the bulb and the keyholes are on the socket.

ParticipantAny city with a population of 100,000+ will have a mixture of people living there, criminal element from outside coming in, etc. Moving because of some 1% bikie idiots from out of town doing their thing or 20-yo girl neighbors seems like overkill.

ParticipantParty? Based on my understanding they’re not even old enough to buy beer!
If they do party (with beer or without), try not to be the grumpy neighbor who calls the cops on them. That’s a sure fire way to earn the ire of the neighbors.
Unless the party is seriously annoying, dangerous, or spills outside their property line, of course
The pit bulls would make me suspicious, true. Otherwise, if they’re 20-21, maybe they finished school early. These days, the right degree can get you $60k+/yr just out of college, which is enough to afford $1400-$1500/mo ($3000 by two people) in rent if you want to spend your money on rent.

ParticipantSuper SU or SuperUser won’t work correctly post android 4.3 unless you have a custom version and/or hacked the kernel…
Still on 4.1, but I thought that there’s a rewritten version of SuperSU that addresses some of the “problems” with 4.3+ devices.

ParticipantRecently went Android … Most important app: SuperSU — all good apps follow from it 🙂
What else? K-9 Mail vs the stock mail applet. PA Tone to test audio/speaker systems. Flashlight. Link2SD. GV Phone, so I can use Google Voice from an account that’s not linked to the OS. Let’s Print Droid — allows printing to non-kloudkrap PCL5 and Postscript printers. WiFi Tracker. JoeVLC. uTorrent. JuiceSSH.

ParticipantWould canceling the contract with the cable firm affect the availability or quality of high-speed Internet service in the complex? Are there other decent options (read: fiber to the premises, not unreliable high-speed wireless or 3 mbps DSL) available in the area?

ParticipantI have a basic Cordura (woven thick Nylon material) wallet that I bought abroad. The big advantage is that it’s designed for bills that are physically taller than USD bills, so US currency is less likely to fall out.
It’s also proven to be pretty indestructible — no noticable wear after three years.
