ParticipantYep — SD charges 2% to pay taxes by card, but 0% if it’s done by e-check. And they’re right to stick it to the banksters and not encourage people to pay by card (giving the banksters a swipe fee).
So not all online payments are created equal.

ParticipantAs nice, but for the fact that it’s surrounded by a desert wasteland. That’s like saying you can buy a mansion in the ‘troit for $50k.
Difference is that NY and So Cal have a large % of jobs in other industries as well.

ParticipantMaybe, but part of the implication is that there aren’t enough non-survival jobs, so people get pushed to survival jobs that pay decently.

ParticipantLong, sedentary periods of work sure don’t help. Jobs with long working hours in the past tended to be blue-collar and involved physical exertion.
Nor does lack of free time to cook, or grab anything other than fast food for lunch.
Of course, there might be other factors in play, like obesogenic chemicals in food and the environment.

Participant” frown if anything less than 10-12 hours daily”
I think this is why some millennials are slow to launch.
Something the boomers got used to I think. Not sure if a lot of millennials are ready for that reality.
Working hours for salaried jobs were quite a bit shorter in the days of the boomers. And homes were smaller/more tightly packed, so commute times weren’t as fucking horrific either.

ParticipantExplain to us how Bill Gates’ reward should be limited.
He should be required to pay a decent level of tax as existed through the 1970s. And people still innovated and made money in the 50s and 60s.

ParticipantI’m confused by the huge divergence between Engineers and Scientists. Culturally we’re both Smart Nerds.
Stress == obesity. Working for corepirate America instead of in academia or government is more stressful.

ParticipantYou can actually buy window or standard wall-sleeve type PTACs right now.

ParticipantDoesn’t work legally — they’re paying the Cubans, so you’re considered to be indirectly still spending your money in Cuba.
If you want to go, probably better to cut out the middlemen and just buy a ticket to Cuba through a third country, being careful not to take back any evidence when you re-enter the US.

ParticipantI never understood why it’s illegal for Americans to visit Cuba, but it’s fine for them to go to North Korea on a US passport (if the Norks will have them, of course).

ParticipantYou’d be surprised — not all people are eligible for those mods. In particular, idiots who bought non-primary, as an investment at the top of the market, are out of luck.
Also, the mods don’t mean a free house. One person I know who modified had her payment reduced by $500/mo or so. But only as long as it remains a primary — if she has to move for work, she loses the house.

ParticipantAC has always been an armpit, even when the casinos were supposedly doing well.
As far as the Nevada HOA issue: the article seems to state that the HOA sale extinguishes the bank’s claims. Any residual funds from the auction beyond that HOA’s claims go to pay off the banks, but beyond that, the banks aren’t entitled to money.
Of course, the banks themselves can bid at the HOA foreclosure auction.

ParticipantSome areas are still dropping, especially down in South NJ. Others are rising, but slightly.
A few rare areas (mostly very near NYC or wealthy towns) are doing well.
As far as the NV decision that HOA liens take first precedence, wouldn’t that actually have the potential to lower prices.
On the one hand, an HOA foreclosure would be more valuable since the status is less ambiguous. On the other, it would allow the HOA to auction at minimal reserve. If the bank gets fawked, what do they care as long as they get theirs back?

ParticipantHaven’t been there, but apparently, allowing people to go there unrestricted would require Congressional action, which hasn’t happened yet. But yeah, you can catch a flight via Mexico or Guatamala, and the Cubans will supposedly be nice enough not to stamp your passport if you’re American.
