ParticipantWouldn’t that be more like El Cajon or Lakeside? 🙂

ParticipantJazzman — I follow the Polish markets for personal reasons. As far as Manhattan, parts of it are not much more expensive than San Diego especially when you consider “customary” apartment sizes. 800-1000 sf is family-sized, while it isn’t considered in San Diego.
There’s half the island above 100th St 😉 The problem is that most buildings are rentals and not for sale, so inventory/turnover will always be low.

ParticipantWho wants to be in a gated prison with an HOA, cameras, and security guards? I wonder if the gates are to keep the riff-raff out or the residents in.
I’d sooner move to San Quentin. At least room and board are free and it has great views of San Francisco Bay.

ParticipantNot all of California. San Diego apartment prices are only slightly more expensive per square foot/meter as those in Krakow, Poland, hardly a wealthy chichi city.
As far as New York, it’s actually somewhat cheaper than London or Paris. But higher property taxes that hit apartment (vs single to three family house) owners hard account for the disparity.

ParticipantAnd how many plumbers and dry-wallers own their own business, vs. the ones that are on drugs and just survive?
Wow, stereotypes. There are plenty of hard-core druggies among software and finance types as well. Probably more, considering that stimulants help people deal with long working hours.
And the high-pressure white-collar folks tend to be more apt to overspend as well. They might make more at the outset, but the money goes down the drain just as quickly.

ParticipantDid you think this was a pickup joint? Didn’t know you were looking, flu.

ParticipantWhat does that have to do with this discussion? My point was that marrying a blue-collar guy that’s not “driven” to be a Qualcomm or Goldman Sachs drone isn’t the end of the world as FlyerInHI seems to think.
Nor is BEING a practitioner of the blue-collar trades. Ever see what good electrical contractors earn?

ParticipantIf a girl falls in love with a future shop keeper, plumber or electrician, her family might end up much more financially secure than being married to a software engineer who’s obsolete by age 40.
Competition isn’t everything, BTW. Kids need time to be themselves, not be driven from one awful after-school program to another.

ParticipantSecond area looks rather … inflammable … if fires happen again. Living on the edge of all that fuel is living on the edge.

ParticipantRegarding schools, it’s sometimes easier for a smart kid to get into a good private university from an “6” or “7” school than an “8 to 10.” Admissions officers tend to like a bit of economic diversity and points are given for being successful even if you didn’t go to a “top” chichi high school

ParticipantIf there’s a crash, wouldn’t it happen in China first? Or maybe in the UK? Or New Zealand or Canada?
Markets are local and not as tied together as you’d think. They’ll correct at their own pace. I don’t think we’ll have a crash like 2009, but we might have a gradual loss of interest over 1-2 years.

ParticipantNot everyone have the cash to buy an older property and upgrade it. You can’t roll the cost of upgrade into a loan like a new house.
Why do you HAVE to upgrade it NOW and make it look like something out of Martha Stewart? People are complete woosies. A 1960s or 1970s kitchen with a new stove, fridge, and dishwasher (under 2 grand) is just as functional as a modern one. Bathrooms: laying tile is cheap if there’s nasty old carpet there.
The whole “zOMG we must remodel now” thing is idiotic as long as the basic systems of the house are intact and functional.

ParticipantMy goal is to have paid off HOUSES (with an S) before retirement. Paid off houses with paying tenants able to pay for my and my family’s housing and then some anywhere in the world.

ParticipantMaybe my level of giveashit is just measurably lower than many people’? As long as the place is clean and in a nice location, the color of the kitchen tiles or the newness of the appliances does little for me.
