ParticipantNot really: there will still be an application process, grades, different majors, and different schools. Just less student debt on the undergrad level.

ParticipantTypical tech snob response that doesn’t take the need for human interaction, both with teachers and between students, into account. Also, engineering courses need labs and things like that.
Blah blah blah, no need for location, everything should be behind a fuckin screen.

ParticipantNYC and SF probably have some specific buildings going for $5000-10,000 psf.

ParticipantI’m not sure if we CAN plan better. Besides, people who want that kind of environment gravitate towards older cities, not new build in San Diego.

ParticipantSadly those type of planned communities usually end up culturally dead, with chain stores gracing the ground floor retail spaces and no real community life. I’d sooner live in North Park (even the “bad” part) or Uni Heights.

ParticipantDoesn’t every older generation say that about the next generation or two? “In MY day, grump-grump-grump GET OFF MY LAWN!”

ParticipantIf you’re a bear on So Cal property, what would be wrong with selling now (at peak), RENTING for a few years, while buying income property at lower prices out of state to pay some of the rental costs?

ParticipantThe OP said “jumbo loan” which implies that it is not GSE-backed.

ParticipantAt a certain point, price increases will choke out growth, though, so inflation-adjusted prices will not rise forever.
And another ‘cession is quite likely. Maybe not a “great recession” but a “good recession” 🙂 Seems to happen at least every ten years and we’re going on six.

ParticipantThat sounds like prison not growing up. Gotta love America, happy Vet’s Day!
This is what we fought for?

ParticipantTime to encourage millennial twitter-twits to go to grad school for basket weaving. Call it “wicker engineering.” Keep ’em in debt so they keep renting and don’t get uppity about buying 🙂

ParticipantRemember that if prices/rents go up, it will reduce population growth/influx.

ParticipantOr just drive an older diesel car in CA that’s cheap to register and produced before the smog cutoff… 🙂
And I’m not sure if every idiot off the street being able to arm him/herself qualifies as “safety”. Gun laws in California aren’t that onerous but tend to weed the overly eager weekend warriors out.
And hahahahahahaha. They really gave up an apartment in Manhattan to buy a house in Austin?

ParticipantShe hasn’t applied for a public school yet, since she needs to get her certification first. But she says that she’s heard application is no picnic either in public schools.
