Like most Americans I am neither a conservative or a liberal. I believe in a balanced budget and conservation, which makes me conservative…but when it comes to social issues I side with the underdogs which makes me a liberal. But currently you have a whole group of people that get their misinformation from Fox news and having any intellegent conversation with them is impossible. I just keep pointing out that Al Queda is in Pakastan, Iraq didn’t have anything to do with 9/11, and we are fighting wars in this country to protect our oil assets. We don’t give a crap about democracy or we wouldn’t have had the CIA get rid of democratically elected governments and install dictatorships in Chile, Iran, and Guatamala. We did so to protect our assets. Who ever heard of borrowing billions from the Chinese and giving tax cuts during the time of war? The party is over my friends and it is going to be a nasty, bumpy ride and those that have live on credit are going to be hurting the most. Whether you are a conservative or a liberal if you look at just the facts you will see that Bush’s policies have made us economically weaker and unless we get a government that will speak the truth and make the hard choices the end results will be worse. Unfortunately McCain, Clinton, and Obama are not going to tell the truth BECAUSE THEY WOULD NEVER GET ELECTED. They are going to tell you that water flows uphill and we can “grow” ourselves out of this fiscal mess. And once and for all quit calling Bush a conservative, he has spent more money and borrowed more money that any president in the history of the US. He is responsible for four of the largest deficts in history, his father is reponsible for the fifth…that isn’t conservative that is just plain stupidity. Next time someone proclaims that they are conservative ask them about a balanced budget…

slackerboyParticipantI grew up in PB and it was such a nice community in the 60’s…the late 60’s the hippies (my older siblings included) hung out at the beach, but it was such a mellow scene because everyone was stoned. I don’t think alcohol is the only problem, I wouldn’t be surprised if meth played a part in the behavior too. I find it unbelievable that people are paying a million bucks to live near a beach with polluted water and horrible people…but to each their own I guess. San Diego does not plan for the future, they are always behind the curve…that is why it has so many problems. But I have a feeling the VOTERS will have their say eventually and alcohol will be banned. But where will these losers head to next?
slackerboyParticipantSan Diego has smog, poluted beaches, brawls as the beach, gridlock traffic, budget deficits, million dollar tract homes, and a lack of urban planning…what more could you want in a city?
slackerboyParticipantTwo adults, college educated, household income around 200k, but we only work part-time and take three months off, we have been saving and investing for a number of years so now our work income is around 120k and our investment income is 80k. We paid cash for our very modest condo, have no debt, and drive a 2000 Toyota. We live on around 60k a year, the rest we put away so we can retire in a couple of years at age 52.

Financially or Socially? #57859slackerboyParticipantI think all the old rules have been broken with the current administration. We have a social conservative and a fiscal disaster in office right now. Our governer is more liberal than many Democrats, so I vote for fiscal conservatives that are socially liberal, mainly a Libertarian point of view. The Republicans are for larger government and so are the Democrats. The basic difference is the R’s borrow and spend and the D’s tax and spend. I would say tax and spend is better, at least we are spending cash and not making our grandchildren pay for our follies. By the way my household income is around 200k and and I paid cash for my modest condo and drive a 2000 Toyota, so I know I am not typical when it comes to the American way of life. We have zero debt… But we also only have to work part-time 9 months of the year and the rest of the time we over at the beach in the south of France.

slackerboyParticipantRustico you are not alone. Our household income is well over $200k a year. We live in a condo we paid cash for in 2000 for $120k, drive a 2001 Toyota, and have no debt. What do we do with our money? We take the summers off and stay in our trailer (white trash villa with wheels) at the beach in the South of France. The rest we save, save, save and we are retiring in two years at the ripe old age of 53…we all make choices in life, unfortunately many are swayed by all the hype that you should buy “the most house you can afford” and other pearls of wisdom put out by the same people that profit from them.
slackerboyParticipantIt is depressing looking in San Diego isn’t it? I know the weather is nice here, but with the high home prices you rarely will be enjoying it because you will be working your butts off to pay all the expenses. I made the mistake once in San Francisco of being house poor and never again! Please really consider your purchase before you jump off the cliff. Can you really afford that house? We are programed as Americans to spend way more than we can afford, it is an industry that depends on our emotions. But if you sit down and really look at your lifestyle and crunch the numbers you will probably come to the conclusion you can not afford it. Our household income is over 200k a year and we live in a condo that we bought in 2000 for $120k (We paid cash). We also drive a 2001 Toyota and have zero debt. With our income we should be living in a McMansion in Carmel Valley and driving a Lexus, and using my credit cards to make up the difference. I know, I know this is not the American way, we spend our summers in Switzerland and we picked up on their “pay cash for everything and live below your means” way of life.
slackerboyParticipantToo many of us Americans live in financial la la land…
I live in Palm Desert and work at a very upscale restaurant. This blog caught my eye because many times in the past few years I’ve commented to friends that I have seen an increase of twenty somethings driving 75k cars and coming into our restaurant with friends and dropping $500 on dinner. But since last year I have seen a real drop in these kind of guests. Our business is down about 10-15% and I think the contributing factor is that the “ATM” machine of refinancing has shut down. My partner and I own our house without a mortgage, drive a 2001 Toyota, and have zero debt. We make around 120-150K a year and have 750k saved for retirement. With the income from our portfolio (which we don’t touch) and our savings we put away between 120k and 150k a year. But we don’t live like paupers…we keep a boat in Coronado (instead of buying a overpriced dump at the beach, which we could afford anyways) and have a white trash villa with wheels (a trailer) at the beach in the South of France, where we spend three months a year at, when the restaurant closes. You can have the lifestyle you want,it is all about choices, and I would not trade ours for a big McMansion in a mind numbing boring suburb for the world. It is nice to know that we can sell our condo (we sold our house a few years back and paid cash for this place as a bank repo) and live very well off our investments. We obtained our financial security the old fashion way by working hard and always saving as much as possible. We have seen these bubbles in the past and the people that get creamed are the ones that a few months back were telling you how stupid you were for sitting on all the equity and not pulling it out and doing something with it…well you live your life the way you want and I will live my life without laying in bed at night stressed out about debt. -
