Participant
You keep setting yourself up as having some level of expertise based on what amounts to one tour of duty in the very narrow universe of El Salvador. Be honest with yourself and face the fact that your connection with the Army was a long time ago, far, far away, and it didn’t last for very long.
Now I don’t wish to hit you too hard here, because I think you’re the right sort of fellow, just a bit limited by your limited experience. If you had been an officer, then you’d know something about the law of land warfare. And had you spent a full career, you might have a better idea of what you don’t know. You’re like the fellow who once took the bay ferry, and now wants to tell you of his life at sea.
So, now we know what you think about AFF’s background. I give him a lot of credibility because he’s seen a lot and is fairly reasonable in his views which are, no doubt influenced and tempered by those experiences. You have consistently “name-dropped” about your own background but we don’t have much context for the how and why of your psychotic perspectives.
I clearly have not served. Euphemistically speaking, I have a membership to [take your pick of any] organization for the prevention of cruelty to animals. In other words, I don’t much support re war and violence. They have their place but are typically to be reserved as last resorts (and I try to teach my kids that lesson too, to make them better future adults). I think most people think more like me and less like some Rambo wannabe (without the moral superiority). If you think you are so goddamned righteous, give us a good look at where you are coming from. Instead of the tawdry crumbs of info you toss out to try to give your psychosis the air of informed normalcy.

ParticipantRegarding Hamdan’s “trial,” wtf are we prosecuting bin Laden’s driver for?!?!? Yeah, he should probably go to jail for being involved, but why so much fanfare and muscle behind it. Save it for the real criminal–like why the fuck don’t we have bin Laden by now!? What are we doing monkeying around with 16 year old detainees in Gitmo (article and video released a week or so ago) when Criminal #1 is still at large–or so we all are led to believe. The current status is either that our efforts to capture him are incredibly incompetent or we are prolonging (or obfuscating) his capture or death for political reasons, both of which are abhorrent.

Participant
At some point, with torture and rendition, you become what you behold. So what is the gain if we “win” the War on Terror and sacrifice all that we hold dear in the process?
I think this is the most eloquently stated position I have seen here so far on the torture matter. Put aside all the “facts” re the usefulness and inhumanity and incredible depravity of the enterprise of putting another human being through intense physical pain–one who has questionable information or ties to anything relevant–what are we as a people if we engage in this activity? Don’t we become the the people we are supposedly fighting against? And if you are going to “fight terrorism,” can you avoid becoming a terrorist yourself if you use such methods?Shadowfax

ParticipantRus: I am the 9-5 worker in our family of 4. My 4-year-old is also fond of “poo poo head” so glad to hear it is not unique to her. The 2-year-old is on the bandwagon now too. Won’t use the potty, but sure has a potty mouth thanks to the older sibling’s influence.
I guess I am in the same boat as you–I really don’t have time to “study” these days (unless it’s billable to my job or involves pre-school matters). I have a stack of books from floor to ceiling I hope to read when the kids are both in grade school and I presume I’ll have more time for those pursuits. There are various random things I’ve picked up along the way and some quick internet searches and quick scanning of some major news media (I am partial to Keith Olberman and the Daily Show, so now my Achilles heel is revealed to all the far-right wackos. His “Special Comments” are fantastic–he really is a wonderful, CRITICAL newsman, which is what the media is supposed to be!)
Glad to be here and just trying to participate in the greatest thing our founding fathers left to their progeny–open debate! Oh, and maybe learn a little about the housing market and the general concensus of when we hit bottom so us renters can pounce!
