ParticipantI am sorry, I look on the internet all the time, and there is no substitute for going out there and see how it feels. Especially with the poor quality of the photos nowadays. Sometimes the descriptions (remarks) don’t do justice to the house either.
How spacious, how bright, how much noise, what exactly is next to it, can you hear the train/freeway, can you smell the fast food from nearby, can you see the powerlines?
You have to be selective when visiting houses, MANY can be eliminated based on internet info alone, but others can’t be. Or some may looks so-so on the internet, and be really good deal once you look at them.

ParticipantWhat about maintenance of the home – how much should one put aside monthly for this stuff? If he is buying in Poway, or PQ, it could be house that’s built in 70s and have enough deferred maintenance and other ongoing issues.

I am still discovering certain pockets in the areas we are interested in, that are interesting – not that much inventory you see. So without that information, without enough sampling of various areas/pockets/neighborhoods – that have to BE on the market – how can you have a good idea about what’s a good deal?
Edit: I am looking in PQ, among other places, same as OP.
