Another consideration – Mira Mesa. As AN has stated, most of the elementary schools over there are performing well. And the middle school and high school are as good or better than Stanley/UCHS. It has a reputation that is less than stellar – but the test scores of the past few years are totally in conflict with that reputation…In other words – people avoid Mira Mesa because they think the schools are subpar – but they’re actually very good.
Commute would likely be similar to LJ as from Clairemont.
Here’s an example… 500k, over 1500sf, canyon property.

Ah. we’re pretty split about that. We are very aware the schools are quite good there. I have no problems with their schools. I think though that Clairemont is a slightly better value (in the best areas) – more central/coastal location and older and no HOAs. I like it a little better that MM, while my husband favors MM – he likes a little more homogeneity, and community sense. I could be convinced either way. MM is newer but also more expensive, plus HOAs.
Commute will be longer for me (LJ cove/ village) from MM by at least 5′-10′; from Clairemont is a straight shot on 52. to UCSD, it’s probably a wash.
All in all it’s certainly on our list of areas, actually BECAUSE of the schools.
SD R, what do you think, when comparing the better areas of both MM (west) and Clairemont?

Participant

. . . The obvious choice for us is those La Jolla townhomes I mentioned. Extra short & easy commute on city streets. Off I-5. Nearby shopping. Excellent schools. Cons – small townhomes/no yard/no community/students/HOA. old . . .
Scarlett, I just found my Thomas Guide – LOL. This townhome I stayed in in 1980 for ten days was on Mahaila Ave., between UTC and LJ Village Square (which was fairly new back then). It was VERY SPACIOUS (about 2100+ SF if I can recall) with an oversized 2-car garage – had 3 levels incl. garage. Wide turnabout to garage in alley. Very quiet, nice amenities and it didn’t feel like a condo to me at all. I was very impressed. It can’t possibly have MR because the bonds were not even in existence in SD County until 1987. The woman I “dogsat” for was single, no children. Piggs, can you help identify schools and current HOA dues?? I don’t know.
It goes to Doyle elementary , same school as where I’d be where I am. I heard enough complaints about it, but it’s not bad. I know those places.

Why not? I am considering just very few different areas that are within reasonable commute, plus we like the neighborhoods, houses, etc in general; why not let the “choice” make the decision?
(…)YOUR KIDS WILL BE HAPPY WHEREVER THEY GO TO SCHOOL!! (…) It is actually EASIER to get accepted into the UC system in schools where there are more “lower-scoring” or ESL students because the UC system accepts a top percentage of graduates FROM EACH SCHOOL.
I agree that is easier to be in top x% of not that great of a school (but a decent one still), than in an extremely competitve school (especially if your child is not that competitive/ambitious/studious/driven). I am trying to make a compromise here. UC schools would be just fine. It doesn’t have to be LJ or Del Mar. LJ just is most convenient for commute.UC is too expensive for us, for what we want.Scarlett
