Participant
commute from West Mira Mesa to North Parking at UCSD would take me between 10-15 minutes, depending on the lights. UCSD North Parking to downtown LJ is another 5-10 min depending on lights. So the commute would be between 15-25 minutes.
From La Jolla Village Dr w/ Torrey Pines is at least 10′ if yu are really lucky; 15′ with no significant traffic is more the norm. I do that every day. From Clairemont, it would be probably 15′-20′ tops. You miss the 5′-10′ portion of LJ Village Dr and the winded part of torrey pines ( up to LJ Shores/Pkwy).

It has been quite an odyssey for you with regards to your home search. I don’t have any sage advice for you. I think Clairemont provides some value for homebuyers that is hard to find these days. I will not comment on the schools because there has been lots of discussion about that. I really like sduudes recommendation to rent before buying, I think that makes alot of sense but I your resistance to do yet another move is palpable and I can feel it through the monitor. You do have the UC townhome option as you said. There are alot of them to choose from and lots of families send their kids to Doyle. I bring my kids to the park there when we visit grandma over at UC Regents. Anyways, as I said at the beginning of the post I have a soft spot for Clairemont because of the lower pricing. I think there are alot of young couples looking to buy there because of the pricing.
Chuckle… it shows I hate moving, doesn’t it! I’ve never stayed more than 3 years in any place since I got my PhD. Maybe I’ll decide to continue renting where we are – at least until we decide to buy and go to Doyle, which is probably just as good or better than the best schools in Clairemont. Curie would be better. I am not sure it’s the right time to buy house in the next year…
Maybe we’ve seen each other in Doyle park.

Yes, the “choice” will make the decision but I guess I’m not understanding something. Since you don’t yet have a property to apply from, how can you put in a “choice” application? Could you do this from your current rental home? What if you end up buying a property too far from your “choice” school? So it’s a case of the chicken or the egg – which comes first?
I have the shcool year 2011-2012 in mind. I would think that yes, I can choice from my current place – which is very close to Doyle elementary/park, BTW – choice in other UC elemenary like Spreckels and Curie. I don’t have to own a house to choice in, do I? If we don’t get those, the kid will automatically go to Doyle based on current address, if we stay put. But if the kid gets choiced in Curie, then we have options – continue to rent, or buy in UC/Clairemont/LJ (reasonable commute) – all of which are close enough to school too. I wouldn’t buy something too far from school (> 10-15′ drive). The schools will be not much off from our commute to work.
