ParticipantI’ve been today driving on the “Mt” Streets, both north and south of Balboa. I managed to hit 2 open houses in 92111. I liked best the neighborhood, and the house of 1st one
http://www.realtor.com/realestateandhomes-detail/San-Diego_CA_92111_1118857572?mp=1and 2nd one – smaller, but a nice big yard. The neighborhood till we got close there was not quite as nice as the 1st one, but still decent; but as we got close to the canyon, it started to improve. This 2nd one is more in our price range and size.

Pretty close to Holmes elemetary too.
So I liked in general the Mt. streets south of Balboa. Then we visited the Mt. streets north of Balboa…at least where we went – Lindsay Ave., Mt. Henry, Huckee, that I remember, the neighborhood was much more spotty to me. I just didn’t like it as much as I did the one near those open houses above. the houses and yards themselves were not as nice looking. Too many cars in the streets (if they are residents, why not park in the garage? or at least the driveway), too many boats and RVs. Perhaps there were some events going on; we will go see the neighborhood again at some other time – this was just a first impression. Some yards and houses seemed neglected though.
I would not exclude CLMT (92117, 92111), but I really have to go see any house I’d be interested, the neighborhoods change enough in the space of a couple blocks. It sort of reminded me of older PQ. Anyway, I saw only a very small portion of CLMT, and in a holiday weekend no less. Need to see more.
Have a nice Memorial Day!

ParticipantDefinitely 92126 is in our choices. I also think in 92121 we would be overextending ourselves. if it’s just a little work, it’s ok. we are not handy at all, plus busy. 92110 – I don’t think so, 921111 – only certain neighborhoods.
I don’t think elementary school is critical, but, since I said before in this thread, I don’t want to move yet again to anoter rental, I’d rather pick something really good now. If I can’t find it, I can keep renting where we are now and Doyle elementary to where we belong now is actually a good school.
1500 sq ft – single story would be ok. For a 2 story, It’d have to be great in many other aspects.

ParticipantKids can’t really judge a school at this age, can they?
As a kid I’d probably have been very happy with fewer classes and less homework, and had time to make more friends and play too. But in retrospect, it may not have been good for me in the LONG run. Peer influence is high – in good things as well as in bad things. If my classmates would not have listened to teacher, skip classes, etc. I’d probably have joined them at least some of the time. I’d have had a great time, and the approval of my peers, but not good for my education.
My point is, the kids would be happy in any school, they can’t discriminate at this age. So that’s why as a parent I am choosing for them to the best of my knowledge – within some limits. I am not going for the very best. Yes, it is up to the kid, but the schools and the demographic help a lot too.
30 years ago, only 30% of high school grads went to college. But in my age group, I think the % is at least twice that, if not higher. I don’t KNOW anybody in my peers who didn’t go to college.
