ParticipantCA Renter, hats off to you! Yes, active duty and families do receive more benefits now. And, yes, the spouses do whine at times, and need to be set straight. However, many are young and do not understand the military, and it seems that new marriages at such a young age with long periods of separation create a greater level of anxiety. Older more established marriages seem to tolerate the separations more effectively. And, most of lower ranking enlisted are young.
Service members can also contact The Fleet and Family Support Center (FFSC) for assistance. There is an FFSC at every base and satellite offices in Murphy Canyon, Serra Mesa and Bayview.

ParticipantThe military are hardly overpaid, considering their duties. Their operational schedules and deployments are even more frequent than they were 5 years ago. They come back from a 6-8 month deployment, and in just 6 weeks are back to frequent underways. In less than a year, many of them are back on another deployment. It is very hard on the families. Sometimes they miss the births of their children. Imagine missing 6 months of your one year old’s development?
Sometimes, the kids don’t even know them when they return. Sometimes they return to find their wives have been cheating, moved out, bought cars/run up the bills…not saying this couldn’t happen if they were home, but being across the world with sporadic email and minimal phone calls, makes it much harder for them to know what is going on.
Many of these guys/ladies work very hard, and if there are unresolvable problems, they are administratively separated.

ParticipantI am guessing you could find a rental in CV that allows dogs. Only because those are high end homes, and I think high end renters may be permitted dogs, as they may be presumed to be more responsible. I concur about checking craigslist and using the pet screening option.
I think it is the lower end homes that won’t allow dogs because they end up with people that don’t take care of the dogs, and the dogs trash the house, left outside tethered on leashes (which is now against the law).
What I would check is if there is any law forbidding bringing pets to USA. Also, you cannot fly with pets during the summer or winter, because large pets are put in the cargo hold, and can die from heat or cold.
