Participanti kinda like most people on this board, paramount. but it is true that one answer to the question “where did all the money go?” is people who sold at the peak (and bought much lower). and there are quite a few of those here.

Participantafx, i’m all for the best of both worlds in between solutions. but norway is a special case. massive oil revenues and a small, homogeneous, well-educated population.
norway’s lesson for usa: reduce your population by 95%, and things will be easier for the people left.

ParticipantI am a very literal person…. the rest is history.
I’ve looked (seriously, as in hundreds of hours in some years, and hiring attorneys and real estate agents…) for a home for a long time without buying yet. I took a break for the first half of the 1980’s, and a few breaks of a year or two elsewhere, but I’ve been (renting and) looking for a home to buy more or less continuously since 1975.
I’ve researched homes in most counties in the states I’ve lived in, and in most states in the US, and most countries in Europe (west and east), Australia, New Zealand, and China and Singapore and Indonesia….
None of my family or friends believes I will ever buy. Only I do.

ParticipantI think you’re seeing a tug of war going on here between the conflicting inner selves of the piggs. Selfishly, we all know that buying a house with little or none of your own money (e.g. FHA deals) is almost certainly a great deal. What makes it a great deal is what offends and bothers our social side – the giveaway from helpless taxpayers to borrowers buying too much home.
